Sommer, 25, has signed a contract until 2019 and will join Moenchengladbach in the summer, the Bundesliga club have announced.

The Switzerland international will replace ter Stegen, 21, who has been tipped to move to Barca at the end of the season, with the Foals set to cash in on a player who announced in January that he will not extend his contract which expires in 2015.

“Marc-Andre ter Stegen has told us that he will definitely leave us in the summer. We have by now agreed terms with the new club,” Moenchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl told the club’s official website. “He will definitely move abroad.”

Ter Stegen has previously rejected a contract offer at Moenchengladbach, and has been touted to succeed Victor Valdes, who is set to leave Barcelona in the summer, at the Camp Nou.

Sommer, who is likely to be Switzerland’s second-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup, has won three Swiss Super League titles with Basel, while he also has Champions League experience.

“He is an excellent goalkeeper, who has earned a lot of international experience for his 25 years,” Eberl said. “We are delighted that he has opted to join us.”
