Moura, Di Maria disappoint; PSG squander top spot in Group A

PSG somehow blew their chance to top Group A and just about avoided defeat at home to Ludogorets thanks to Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria's second half goals.

Positives

Despite the poor result, Cavani showed once again that he is one of the only players in this current Parisien squad who can be counted on and scored an excellent acrobatic effort to level at 1-1.

The Uruguay international may have missed great chances against Arsenal home and away, as well as Basel away, but Unai Emery's men would have been worse off in this group stage without him. To score six goals from six appearances and only fail to find the net in Switzerland is impressive.

On a cold night with things not going their team's way on the pitch, the French champions' ultras kept singing and supporting their players from the stands -- even if some did not deserve such loyalty. Other than those two things, there was nothing positive to take from PSG throwing away the chance to top a Champions League group for the first time since 2013-14.

Negatives

There were too many minus points in a match that should have seen the French capital outfit bounce back from their Montpellier disappointment and seize the chance to top Group A.

Di Maria, despite scoring a late equaliser, was woeful again and his poor form is becoming a bigger concern with every passing match. The Argentina international ghosts in and out of games so frequently that it is like playing with 10 men a lot of the time.

Emery's inability or unwillingness to make changes during the match is another major worry. Why did the Spaniard wait until the 80th minute to make his first substitution, and when it came, why was it Layvin Kurzawa on for Maxwell? It was extremely unconvincing again from the 45-year-old.

PSG's defence has become extremely porous of late and sloppy play at the back allowed Ludgorets to score both of their goals. Virgil Misidjan was allowed far too much space for the visitors' opener and Marquinhos and Alphonse Areola combined to gift Wanderson the Bulgarians' second.

Manager rating out of 10

3 -- Emery aligned a starting XI that -- on paper -- possessed more than enough quality to dispose of Ludogorets but the Basque tactician froze when he needed to make radical changes.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Alphonse Areola, 3 -- Another unconvincing display. After a nightmare in Montpellier and a significant role in Ludogorets' second goal, the Frenchman should be aware of Kevin Trapp breathing down his neck in the coming weeks.

DF Thomas Meunier, 4 -- The Belgium international did not offer the same attacking impetus as Serge Aurier and was isolated at times on the right. The Ivory Coast international replaced him late on but by then it was too late.

DF Marquinhos, 4 -- A second consecutive below par performance from the Brazil international, who followed up his shocking showing in Montpellier with another big mistake to play Ludogorets in for their second goal.

DF Thiago Silva (C), 6 -- Although there is no escaping the fact he played a role in the visitors' opener, few -- with exception of Cavani -- tried as hard as the captain did to drag PSG back into the encounter. He hit the woodwork twice with headers and did his best to keep a shaky back line together.

DF Maxwell, 4 -- The veteran Brazilian was not poor but as soon as Kurzawa replaced him, it became obvious how much better the Frenchman is as an option at this level.

MF Thiago Motta, 5 -- The Italt international was booked early on and will now miss the first match of the latter stages. He helped in the creation of some chances but PSG could have done with greater creativity in place of Motta or Blaise Matuidi.

MF Blaise Matuidi, 6 -- The France international battled through the match after a difficult first half and applied some crucial pressure in the build-up to his team's late equaliser.

RW Angel Di Maria, 3 -- He might have scored the late leveller but the Argentine went missing for most of the game and Emery insisting on playing him wide on the right looks negligent at present. Although he was denied a clear penalty, which could have put PSG 2-1 up, it was another woefully inadequate display.

No. 10 Hatem Ben Arfa, 5 -- One of the hosts' livelier players. The Frenchman had a powerful shot headed behind in the second half, andwas a tricky customer for the Ludogorets defence but was left to support Cavani alone as Di Maria and Lucas Moura contributed little.

LW Lucas Moura, 5 -- The Brazilian tried plenty but little came from it, as he continues to struggle on the left. Emery needs to consider restoring Lucas to his preferred right-side role.

FW Edinson Cavani, 6 -- "El Matador" worked hard all night but was given next to nothing in the first half. His predatory instincts kicked in for the second and he scored an excellent acrobatic effort to bring his team level for the first time.

Substitutes

DF Layvin Kurzawa, NR -- Given the final 10 minutes in place of Maxwell, the France international assisted Di Maria's late equaliser.

LW Jese Rodriguez, NR -- The Spaniard was introduced for the final five minutes and barely got a touch. Many PSG fans are convinced he is transfer flop but how can they judge when he barely gets a chance?

DF Serge Aurier, NR -- The Ivorian replaced Meunier for the final few minutes but it was too late to make much of a difference by then.
