FC Goa 1-0 East Bengal

(Brison Fernandes 13')

FC Goa defeated East Bengal FC by 1-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa in their Indian Super League match on Sunday.

Goa moved to the second spot in the points table with their eighth victory of the season, having amassed 30 points from 16 matches. Brison Fernandes' sixth goal of this ISL campaign proved to be crucial for the home team.

It was another all-round show by Brison who completed 13 out of his 18 attempted passes, made one interception, produced three goal-scoring opportunities, put in four tackles, and netted once.

FC Goa will play their next game against Chennaiyin FC on January 25. East Bengal FC are set to face Kerala Blasters FC on January 24.

Kerala Blasters 0 - 0 NorthEast United

Kerala Blasters played for more than an hour with 10-men and showed remarkable defensive nous to keep out a belligerent NorthEast United side at home in Kochi. Aibanbha Dohling was sent off in minute 30 for attempting a headbutt on Alaeddine Ajaraie and that saw young Korou Singh move back to right back from his usual station as right wing forward. Up against the league's runaway top scorer in Ajaraie, Korou held his own as he and his defensive partners shut the door on NEUFC repeatedly.

The visitors had 18 shots on goal, but only three on target and could only build an aggregate xG of 0.83 as Blasters' defensive discipline under interim coach TG Purushothaman shone through. The point sees Blasters climb to seventh, while NEUFC remain put in fifth.

Hyderabad 1 - 1 Bengaluru FC

(Devendra Murgaokar 21' - Sunil Chhetri 78')

Bengaluru FC dropped crucial points in the title race, with a 1-1 draw away to bottom-placed Hyderabad FC. Sunil Chhetri came to BFC's rescue once again with a second half goal, but Hyderabad had plenty of chances to earn only their third win of the season, and had to be content with a draw.

Hyderabad FC took a shock lead in the 21st minute thanks to some poor defending by Bengaluru FC. Ramhluchhunga Hmar found himself with the ball on the left wing, and worked a yard of space before sending in a peach of a cross to the far post, where Devendra Murgaokar was left completely unmarked at the far post and he made no mistake, stooping low to head the ball into the net from close range. Devendra came close to doubling the host's lead a few minutes after the half-hour mark, but drew a good save from Gurpreet Singh Sandhu with a powerful strike when put through.

Edgar Mendez came on at half-time for BFC and almost made an immediate impact, but sent his header over from Roshan Singh's cross. Hyderabad could have once more doubled their lead a few minutes after the hour mark when Joseph Sunny was put through on goal, but Gurpreet made a good save from a narrow angle to deny him. The BFC keeper needed to be at his best in the 73rd minute as well, denying substitute Sourav K with a volley from a set-piece that he tipped over.

The hosts were made to pay for their profligacy in the 78th minute, when Sunil Chhetri scored for BFC, the 300th goal of this ISL season that ended BFC's 221-minute goal-drought. Ryan Williams floated a cross from the right to the middle of the box, and Chhetri somehow generated a wealth of power with his header, the ball flying past Arshdeep Singh in the Hyderabad goal to make it 1-1. It was Chhetri's 10th goal of the season, having only reached double-digits in an ISL season thrice before. Parag Shrivas, on as a substitute for Hyderabad could have scored the winner against his former team with a header in injury-time but glanced his effort wide, with both teams sharing the spoils at full-time.

Jamshedpur FC 1 - 1 Mohun Bagan

(Eze 60'; Bose 25')

When you hear a 6'6" (and appropriately broad) centre-back has scored a stunner, what do you picture? A bullet header? A thunderbolt from distance? Well, Stephen Eze shrugged off all those tired old stereotypes in the same manner he shrugged off the Mohun Bagan defence as he danced through the entire Bagan half, evading tackles across and calmly slotted it in from inside the penalty box. A dribble for the ages, as the Jamshedpur stalwart ensured his team remained undefeated at home, ensuring a 1-1 draw with league leaders Bagan.

It was Bagan who started stronger, and Subhasish Bose gave them a deserved lead with a cleverly improvised backheeled finish a quarter of an hour into the match. It could have been more for Bagan, but Eze was in superb form in his defensive zone, blocking multiple shots and throwing in a critical last-man challenge to stop Liston Colaco. Bagan's aggregated 1.64xg (vs JFC's 0.31xg) show how much stronger they were, as does the fact that it ended with Bagan taking 20 shots vs Jamshedpur's 9... but it was Eze's wondergoal that stole the spotlight.

Jamshedpur are now second, although Bagan remain eight points clear above them (JFC have a game in hand).

Punjab FC 1 - 1 Mumbai City

(Majcen 45'+1'; Karelis 58')

Superb finishes from Luka Majcen and Nikos Karelis saw Mumbai City and Punjab FC share the spoils in a crucial match as the race for the playoffs heats up.

Majcen opened the scoring in the first minute of injury time at the end of the first half after excellent work from Asmir Suljic in the #10 role behind him. Tip toeing past a couple of challenges, Suljic played in Majcen who curled it powerfully past Phurba Lachenpa (who had just come on in the stead of an injured TP Rehenesh a couple of minutes previously).

While Mumbai kept the ball for large periods (60% possession and almost double the number of accurate passes), they weren't posing much of a threat till Karelis trapped a good Yoell van Nieff line-cutter of a ball from deep, turned on a coin, and finished past a hapless Muheet Shabir.

Punjab, who had 1.29xg to Mumbai's 0.80xg and 18 shots vs Mumbai's 8 will rue not taking their chances as they climbed no higher than eighth, still three points behind Mumbai in that last playoff spot.

Mohammedan SC 2-2 Chennaiyin FC

(Manvir Singh 90+5', Lalremsanga Fanai 90+12' - Laldinpuia 10', Lukas Brambilla 49')

Mohammedan SC grabbed a dramatic 2-2 draw at home to Chennaiyin FC to keep their unbeaten run going, with injury-tim goals from Manvir Singh and Lalremsanga Fanai. Chennaiyin remained tenth in the table, but now six points behind the final playoff spot, while Mohammedan are second-from-last, six points behind Chennaiyin.

Chennaiyin FC took the lead in the tenth minute, with Laldinpuia scoring from a corner. Connor Shields sent in a wicked delivery from the left and Laldinpuia was left alone in the middle of the box to glance a header into the net from close range, making it 1-0 to the visitors. Mohammedan had a chance to equalize close to the half-hour mark, when Mohammad Nawaz conceded a penalty with a foul on Lalremsanga Fanai, but the CFC keeper made up for his error by saving the resultant penalty from Mirjalol Kasimov. At the other end, Padam Chettri also rose to the occasion with a 1-on-1 save from Wilmar Jordan in first-half injury time to ensure the hosts went into the break trailing by only one goal.

Kasimov's miserable day continued when he was dispossessed of the ball early in the second half and it resulted in CFC doubling their lead. Swiftly after Kasimov lost the ball, Lukas Brambilla was fed in the right side of the box, and he cut in past a couple of defenders before squeezing the ball into the far bottom corner to make it 2-0 in the 49th minute. Zoherliana hit the woodwork with a header on the hour mark, but it took until the fifth minute of injury time for Mohammedan to find the net, with Manvir Singh scoring from Makan Chote's cross after a composed touch and finish in the box. With the game heading into its final moments, Franca chased down a long ball and found Manvir in the box, where Laldinpuia turned villain with a foul on Manvir, conceded a penalty and was sent off as well. Fanai stepped up and finished confidently into the bottom corner to grab a dramatic draw for the hosts.

NorthEast United 1-1 FC Goa

(Jithin MS 76', Mohammad Yasir 65')

NorthEast United FC came from behind to hold FC Goa 1-1 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati in their Indian Super League match on Tuesday.

Mohammad Yasir had his fair share of luck when he handed the lead to Goa but Jithin MS' 76th minute strike saw NorthEast United split the points. This was the 11th draw between these two teams, the most number of stalemates between two teams in this competition's history.

After the draw, Goa move to second place on the table with 27 points from 15 matches. NorthEast are fifth with 24 points from their 15 games.

NorthEast United will travel to Kerala to face the Kerala Blasters on January 18 whereas FC Goa will host East Bengal FC on January 19.
