Al Hilal have signed Manchester City defender João Cancelo on a permanent transfer, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

The Saudi Pro League side turned their attention to Cancelo after being told fellow City defender Kyle Walker was unavailable.

Cancelo joins Al Hilal in a deal worth an initial £21 million ($28m), with the 30-year-old set to earn £15m a year, a source told ESPN.

"I had many very special moments during my time here at [Man City]," Cancelo said.

"I would like to thank my teammates, the coaches, all the staff at City and the fans for everything during my time here."

The Portugal international hasn't played for City for 18 months and has had loan spells at Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Cancelo leaves City after playing more than 150 games for the club and winning the Premier League title three times.
