Erik ten Hag assured Bruno Fernandes that Manchester United want to keep him this summer after the Portugal midfielder said he will only stay if he feels wanted at Old Trafford.

Fernandes has been linked with a move at the end of the season and ESPN reported on Wednesday that Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr are one of the clubs interested.

Speaking after United's 3-2 win over Newcastle United, Fernandes said he will leave if he is not wanted.

But responding to the comments, Ten Hag told Fernandes he is part of the club's plans for the future.

"The club wants to keep Bruno, there is no question I think," said Ten Hag. "I have to see the interview. As far as I know and everything I know from him, he loves Manchester United.

"He loves the fans and he loves to play for Manchester United. So that is all I know. You see he always gives his best. He's an example."

Fernandes has a contract until at least 2026, but United's financial position means that a large offer for almost any player will have to be considered.

It has led to a host of clubs from across Europe and the Saudi Pro League showing an interest in the 29-year-old and asked about his future following the win over Newcastle, he appeared to use the opportunity to send a message to club bosses.

"The club needs to want me," Fernandes told Sky Sports. "I feel that the club wants me to be part of the future. As I always said, I don't want to be a player the club doesn't want to have.

"If for some reason the club doesn't want me, I will go."

The win comes as relief for United during a season in which they are on track to have their worst Premier League finish ever, but victory for Chelsea at Brighton still leaves Ten Hag's side outside of the European places going into the final day on Sunday.

United still have once chance at silverware when they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 25.
