Thomas Tuchel opened the door on the notion of him staying on as Bayern Munich head coach on Friday, saying that while he has agreed to leave the club at the end of the season, "everything is possible."

Bayern announced in February that the 50-year-old would step down from his role at the end of the season.

The Bavarian side have endured a difficult campaign domestically as they trail Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen by 12 points.

However, their performances in the Champions League, where they have reached the last four and drew 2-2 with Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena in the first leg of their Champions League final on Tuesday, has led some to say that Tuchel should stay on as manager.

Asked about the possibility of him remaining as coach, Tuchel told a news conference: "This is an agreement so this can't be changed.

"Well, you can change every contract on mutual consent because we had a contract as well and we agreed on ending it early so everything is possible. But the answer is the same, the agreement stands and the agreement exists."

A source has told ESPN that should Tuchel leave Bayern as planned this summer, his preference is to return to the Premier League and he would be open to speaking to Manchester United if a vacancy opened up.

United boss Erik ten Hag is under pressure at Old Trafford after a disappointing second season in charge coupled with the arrival of new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Bayern have also found it difficult to appoint Tuchel's successor.

Ralf Rangnick said on Thursday that he has decided to remain in his role as head coach of the Austria national team, turning down the opportunity to take on the manager's job at Bayern.

Leverkusen boss and former Bayern midfielder Xabi Alonso had been linked with the soon-to-be vacant manager role but has announced his intention to remain at his club.

Meanwhile, the man Tuchel replaced as manager, Julian Nagelsmann, also turned down a return to Bayern and has signed an extension to remain as Germany head coach beyond this summer's home European Championship.

Bayern face Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Saturday before travelling to Madrid for the second leg of their Champions League semifinal on Wednesday.
