MANCHESTER -- Sir Alex Ferguson presented Arsene Wenger with a gift on his final trip to Old Trafford as Arsenal manager.
The former United boss handed the Frenchman a metal vase in a box on the touchline ahead of the game before Jose Mourinho joined in to applaud the 68-year-old.
Ferguson and Wenger were involved in some titanic battles as managers of United and Arsenal as the two teams dominated the Premier League between 1996 and 2004.
They shared the nine titles -- United won six and Arsenal won three -- before Mourinho's Chelsea broke the run in 2005.
Wenger has announced his intention to step down at the Emirates at the end of the season.
Ahead of the game, Mourinho, who has been involved in some ugly spats with Wenger, called on United supporters to give him "the respect he deserves" and he was applauded on to the pitch by the home fans ahead of kick-off.
