Malaysia concede three goals in 21 minutes in loss to Indonesia

Malaysia suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Indonesia in an international friendly on Tuesday night, conceding three times in the first 21 minutes in Solo.

The home team were playing in their first competitive match in a year after FIFA banned them for government interference in football matters. And yet, they dominated proceedings in the AFF Suzuki Cup warm up game at Manahan Stadium.

The hosts did not show any signs of rustiness and prised open the Malaysians after just six minutes. Fadhli Shas failed to deal with a straightforward cross and the centre-back's error let Boaz Solossa in, with only Khairul Fahmi to beat.

The striker did not waste the gift, lashing past the custodian to give Indonesia the lead in front of a capacity crowd.

Solossa's goal was the first the Merah Putih had scored in 17 months since a 2-1 victory over Myanmar in March 2015.

The Indonesians surged further ahead five minutes later, thanks to more comical defending from Malaysia.

Midfielder Brendan Gan was the culprit this time, hitting a loose pass that was easily intercepted by Solossa, who slipped a pass to Irfan Bachdim.

The popular winger, a one-time Ajax Amsterdam youth player, finished in similar fashion to Solossa for a 2-0 lead.

Brendan's miserable night was compounded four minutes later when he was stretched off injured and replaced by debutant S.Veenod.

Captain Amri Yahyah came closest for Malaysia soon after, whipping in a free kick from the right that just skinned the far post on its way out.

But the Malaysians continued to leave gaping spaces in the final third, and Indonesia exploited to put the game to bed in the 21st minute.

Bachim, always a threat on the ball, saw his effort blocked and fall kindly for Solossa, who slid home to put the Indonesia in the driving seat.

With three goals in the bag, the men in red and white eased off the tempo, but Bachim's dancing feet almost gave them a fourth five minutes after the break.

The Netherlands-born attacker dazzled his way past Shas and Ronny Harun, but saw his toe poke shave the outside of Khairul Fahmi's goal.

That was the last clear-cut chance of the game as Alfred Riedl's men celebrated a momentous return from international exile. For Malaysian coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee, the loss meant another dent in his hopes of building confidence and combinations for November's Suzuki Cup.
