Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick signs one-year extension

Michael Carrick has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United to mean he will stay at Old Trafford for a decade.

The midfielder, whose previous deal was set to expire this summer, has put pen to paper on an extension to keep him with United until 2016.

The 33-year-old was an 18.6 million-pound buy from Tottenham in 2006 but United risked losing him on a free transfer this summer until new terms were agreed.

Carrick, who was appointed vice-captain by Louis van Gaal, has made 376 appearances for United, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

England international Carrick said: "It's fantastic to know that I can continue my incredible journey with this great club. I am thoroughly enjoying my football and the team are progressing in the right direction under Louis van Gaal.

"We are all incredibly focused on getting this club back to where it belongs and competing with the best teams in the world."

Manager Van Gaal welcomed the announcement the former West Ham player is staying, saying in a news conference: "He is important because he can read the game as a player on the pitch so he can coach during the game but he can improve that, I think.

"He is also a midfielder who can play the ball forwards and I like that because our aim is always passing the ball more forward than sideways or backwards and he is a player who can do that. He is my second captain so an important man for my selection.

"Wayne Rooney is my first captain and Michael Carrick is my second captain and that says enough how I value these players and Wayne Rooney is Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick is Michael Carrick. They are different persons."

Carrick now joins a large group of United players whose deals expire in 2016, including Robin van Persie, Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.
