Canadian youngster Josh Doughty claims he is joining Manchester United

Canadian youngster Josh Doughty said that he has signed for Manchester United, although neither the club, nor Real Salt Lake academy, where the teen formerly trained, have confirmed it.

The 17-year-old midfielder, who was a member of Real Salt Lake's academy and has been training with United for a few months, hinted on Twitter that he has passed a medical with the Red Devils.

Doughty said he is likely to go into United's youth ranks, rather than be in contention for first-team football in the near future.

He told O When The Yanks: "I will be playing mainly with the United under-21s, however, I might play with the under-18s to get back up to speed.

"I can play for Canada, England and hopefully will be eligible for the U.S. soon [but] I am still undecided on which team I will play for at the moment."

Doughty has a choice when it comes to international football as he is set to receive U.S. citizenship, while his parents are from England. He is therefore also not in need of a work permit to play in the Premier League.

Four Americans -- James Brown, Edward McIlvenny, Tim Howard and Jonathan Spector -- have played for United, along with Owen Hargreaves, who was born Canada.
