Ukraine defeat Wales as Northern Ireland's unbeaten run hits 10 games

Andriy Yarmolenko scored the only goal as Ukraine defeated Wales 1-0 in a friendly on Monday.

Ukraine's goal came in the 27th minute from a well-worked free kick routine with Ruslan Rotan lobbing the ball over the wall for Yarmolenko to prod past Wayne Hennessey.

Ukraine could have had a second goal in the 58th when Oleksandr Kucher's header went narrowly wide off Rotan's free kick.

Wales pushed forward late on, forcing Ukraine keeper Andriy Pyatov to save first Jazz Richards' low shot at the near post, then Shaun MacDonald's header from the resulting corner.

The result continued a run of poor form for Wales, who have only one win from their past six games.

Elsewhere, Northern Ireland set a national record with 10 games unbeaten as Conor Washington scored the 41st-minute winner in a 1-0 victory at home to Slovenia.

The Queens Park Rangers forward barged his way past two Slovenian defenders at Windsor Park and dodged a third before hitting the ball low for his first international goal, although Slovenia appealed for a foul.

Northern Ireland goalkeeper Roy Carroll saved a penalty from Milivoje Novakovic in the 65th minute.

Earlier, the Faroe Islands held on for a 3-2 win at Liechtenstein.

The visitors had taken a three-goal lead through goals from Brandur Hendriksson, Joan Simun Edmundsson and Soelvi Vatnhamar.

Liechtenstein came alive and got a goal back in the 74th minute through Robin Gubser, but though Sandro Wolfinger added another in the closing stages there was to be no equaliser.

In another game between European minnows, Moldova beat Andorra 1-0 with Igor Armas' 45th-minute goal.
