Singapore international Irfan Fandi still wants to play in Europe one day but for now is solely focused on success in Thai League 1 with BG Pathum United.
As the eldest son of Singapore legend Fandi Ahmad, expectations have been high for Irfan since he played in the youth academies of Spain and Chile.
The towering centre-back broke through as a professional in Singapore before joining Thailand's BG Pathum United at the start of last year.
With younger brother Ikhsan Fandi currently signed to Norwegian outfit Raufoss IL, Irfan -- still only 22 -- continues to dream of a similar move although he wants to achieve more success in Thailand first.
"I still have dreams of playing in Europe one day," Irfan told ESPN in an exclusive interview. "I'm still young and I've said that the goal for me this year is to compete for the Thai League and become champions, and then we'll see what happens next for me.
"The football has been great and, living here, I feel really comfortable. I've settled in really well and everyone's really helpful, from my teammates, the staff and the management."
BG Pathum United had a strong start to the season -- winning three and drawing one of their opening four matches -- before play was brought to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Full contact training started last week ahead of the league's September restart.
Although the Rabbits only won promotion to the top flight of Thai football last year, Irfan sees no reason why they cannot challenge for the title once the campaign resumes. The side has had recent reinforcements in Thailand international Sarach Yooyen and Venezuelan defender Andres Tunez -- a four-time Thai League champion with Buriram United.
"During preseason, I honestly wasn't feeling really connected with the team," Irfan said. "Maybe it's because we had a lot of new players and the style of play changed a little.
"... I feel like this year could be our year if we work really hard, put our minds into it and work as a team.
