Win not enough to save Eibar

Eibar saw their first ever season in the Primera Division come to an agonising end as they were relegated despite easing to a 3-0 win over Cordoba.Mikel Arruabarrena, Raul Navas and Ander Capa all scored in a rampant first half for Gaizka Garitano's side, but their Primera Division dream was killed off as Diogo Salomao's late equaliser at the Nou Camp forced a 2-2 draw between Deportivo La Coruna and Barcelona. The Galicians stay in the top flight thanks to their superior head-to-head record over Eibar, while Granada also stay up thanks to their goalless draw with Atletico Madrid. Before this match Eibar had managed just one win in the second half of the season, but they wasted no time in taking the lead as captain Arruabarrena powered in a header from close range following Capa's cross. They scored again just five minutes later as Navas rose highest to head in from a corner.Saul Berjon came close to scoring the third after taking on a Cordoba defender but his chipped effort sailed just over the bar so it was left to Capa to score next, smashing the ball past goalkeeper Mikel Saizar from the edge of the area.Cordoba, who finish the season with a miserable 20 points and just three wins - the same number of managers that have taken charge of the team this term - finally woke up towards the end of the first half, and Luso and Deivid both came close to getting a goal back.Eibar could not maintain the same intensity in attack in the second half, although Capa would have scored a fourth had Saizar not produced a fine save.News of Salomao's equaliser began to filter through to Ipurua in the final few minutes of the game, killing the joyous atmosphere inside the stadium, and Eibar were powerless to prevent their return to the Segunda Division A.

      Granada 2-0 Cordoba

Granada ensured they remain in the fight to avoid relegation by beating Cordoba 2-0 in an Andalusian derby at El Nuevo Los Carmenes stadium, with the visitors finishing the game with nine men.Inigo Lopez was given his marching orders on the half hour and Diego Mainz capitalised by giving Granada the lead on the stroke of half-time.Youssef El Arabi scored from the spot midway through the second half to finish off the game as a contest, which became even more one-sided when Fede Cartabia talked himself into a red card later on with 12 minutes to go.This was Granada's second victory in a row under new coach Jose Ramon Sandoval, who in just two games in charge has pulled off back-to-back wins, something his predecessors Abel Resino and Joaquin Caparros failed to do this season.Granada stay in the relegation zone but move on to 31 points and are now level with Eibar, who lost 2-0 to Espanyol on Friday and occupy the last position outside the bottom three.Cordoba were relegated to the Segunda Division A last week, and despite the insistence from their players they would give everything in their remaining matches, they were the second best team on the pitch for the 90 minutes, leaking goalscoring chances even when they had 11 men on the pitch. The first opportunity fell to El Arabi following an early corner but he failed to hit the target, while goalkeeper Juan Carlos had to save efforts from Mainz and Piti.Granada began to dominate the play even more once Lopez was shown a second yellow card for a foul on El Arabi, with Jean-Sylvain Babin hitting the post and Ruben Perez going close before Mainz broke the deadlock just before the break.Piti, a former charge of Sandoval with Rayo Vallecano, swung in a free-kick and Mainz evaded his marker Deivid to head in a third goal in six games.Granada continued to call the shots in the second half and El Arabi doubled their lead from the spot after Ruben Rochina was fouled by Aleksandar Pantic, adding to the two goals he scored against Getafe last week.Cordoba have not won a single game in the second half of the season and Cartabia's display of petulance summed up their disastrous campaign. The Argentinian was awarded a foul but demanded a yellow card for his opponent and instead received two bookings himself in a matter of seconds for shouting repeatedly at referee Fernando Teixiera Vitienes. ends

        Levante 1-0 Cordoba

Levante edged another step closer to securing themselves Primera Division football for next season while pushing Cordoba closer to the drop with a 1-0 win at the Ciudad de Valencia.David Barral's well-worked goal just before half-time was all that separated the two relegation battlers, but it was one that could prove key for both clubs in their respective fights to stay up. Levante, who beat Getafe by the same scoreline at the weekend, are now six points clear of third-bottom Deportivo La Coruna - albeit having played a game more - while rock-bottom Cordoba are 11 points from safety with only four games left to the save themselves.Cordoba could mathematically be relegated on Wednesday, but it seems unlikely as it would need Almeria and Eibar to upset the odds in their matches against Sevilla and Real Madrid. The Andalusian side, who are without a win since January 12 and have collected three points since, were always up against it at the Ciudad de Valencia where Levante went close through Juanfran, Barral and Roberto Camarasa before Barral broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute. He pulled the ball down on the edge of the area before spreading it out wide to strike partner Victor Casadesus, who immediately played the ball back in towards the far post for Barral to side-foot home first time.It was a clinical finish to a good move by Barral, and it proved to be the decisive incident of the match as Cordoba were unable to find an equaliser during a second half devoid of many clear goalscoring chances at either end.ends

          Cordoba 0-1 Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao remain in the hunt for a place in next season's Europa League competition after they won 1-0 at Primera Division bottom side Cordoba on Friday.Midfielder Benat earned Athletic all three points in fine style when he exquisitely curled home from the edge of the area early in the second half. The victory moves Ernesto Valverde's side level on points with seventh-placed Malaga, who occupy the final Europa League play-off place.Cordoba have failed to win any of their last 15 league games and are eight points adrift of safety with five matches remaining. Both sides made tentative starts and Athletic defender Mikel San Jose and Cordoba midfielder Fede Cartabia failed to test the respective goalkeepers with long-range strikes inside the opening 15 minutes.Cordoba's on-loan forward Bebe very nearly put his side into the lead shortly after the half-hour mark but his shot from a difficult angle could only crash into the crossbar and rebound to safety.Athletic striker Aritz Aduriz did well to rise between two Cordoba defenders in first-half stoppage time but his header was well saved by Cordoba goalkeeper Juan Carlos, who needed to be at his athletic best to keep his goal intact. The second half was just four minutes old when Fidel wasted a glorious chance to put Cordoba into the lead when he blazed over the crossbar from close range and the hosts were left to rue that missed opportunity when Benat struck a few minutes later.Cordoba needlessly gave away possession in their own half and San Jose's subsequent one-touch pass found Benat, who cut inside and unleashed a ferocious shot that nestled into the net before Juan Carlos could ready himself. The hosts stepped up the pressure in the latter stages but on-loan duo Rene Krhin and Aleksandar Pantic could not find a way past Gorka Iraizoz and Athletic held on for their first win in four matches. ends
