      Rangers 5-0 Queen of the South

      Rangers put the ongoing Joey Barton saga to one side as they cantered into the Betfred Cup semi-finals with a 5-0 win over Queen of the South.Goals from Jason Holt and skipper for the night Andy Halliday put them in control before Martyn Waghorn added a second-half hat-trick.The display - which books Rangers' place in Wednesday's last-four draw - was welcome respite for boss Mark Warburton following a week and more of scrutiny in the wake of the 5-1 Old Firm mauling by Celtic, and the subsequent bust-up with Barton which has now seen the midfielder suspended for three weeks.The win was Rangers' first in four games and ensured the Light Blues, who handed midfielder Matt Crooks his debut off the bench, have now gone a calendar year without suffering defeat at home.Barton was again nowhere to be seen at Ibrox but Halliday - the man he first clashed with to set off the explosive chain of events threatening the one-cap England midfielder's Ibrox future - led out the side. Regular skipper Lee Wallace was given the night off.There was a late blow for Warburton when Josh Windass pulled up during the warm-up with a recurrence of his hamstring problems, meaning Niko Kranjcar was promoted to the starting line-up.There were spells during the opening exchanges where Rangers enjoyed 80 per cent of the possession but penetrating the Doonhamers was another matter.The only effort Rangers mustered in the first 20 minutes was a deflected Harry Forrester strike and it looked like a testing week had left the hosts weary.A goal was needed to perk up Warburton's team and he was relieved to see it arrive 12 minutes before the break.Kranjcar still looks well short of full sharpness but the Croatian's eye for a pass has not diminished. He picked out Michael O'Halloran on the right and the winger wriggled free to tee up Holt to tuck home from close range.With the shackles removed, Rangers began to play.Clint Hill and Lee Hodson came close while Waghorn even tried an ambitious 40-yard lob but Queens keeper Lee Robinson was not fooled.Holt failed to re-appear for the second half as Barrie McKay was introduced.There were warning signs for Rangers as Queens started pressing with more aggression, only for both Derek Lyle and Stephen Dobbie to wasted golden chances to fire their team level.And they were costly misses as Halliday stroked home the second goal after 62 minutes.The midfielder drove forward from midfield before feeding McKay on the left. He continued his run into the box and finished off with style as the winger returned his pass.And the game was taken away from the visitors 60 seconds later as Waghorn swept a pinpoint finish into the bottom corner from 18 yards after another McKay cut-back.Another sublime Kranjcar pass to O'Halloran opened the door again in the 71st minute, with Waghorn arriving at just the right time to tuck home his seventh goal of the season.Former QPR playmaker Kranjcar then laid off for Waghorn to smash home his third with seven minutes left.ends

        Partick Thistle 2-1 Queen of the South

        Steven Lawless struck a last-gasp winner as Partick Thistle fought back to beat Queen of the South 2-1 in an entertaining Betfred Cup clash at Firhill.A Liam Lindsay own goal gave Queen's a deserved lead moments into the second half but they were pegged back by a Chris Erskine strike nine minutes from time.Lawless then volleyed home with seconds remaining to give Thistle the win and move them level on points with their Championship visitors in Group E.Queen of the South came out of the traps quickest and almost took the lead inside three minutes through Derek Lyle.The veteran striker was urged to have a pop at goal following Ziggy Gordon's slack pass, but he saw his 20-yard effort cannon off the inside of the post and away to safety.The home side has opportunities of their own in the first half as they grew into the game. Ade Azeez, making his home debut following his summer capture from AFC Wimbledon, had two chances in two minutes to put Thistle in front.Firstly he headed David Amoo's floated cross into the side-netting, before seeing his second header brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Queen's goalkeeper Lee Robinson.Mark Millar then hit a rasping shot against the bar for Gavin Skelton's side in what was a lively first half.The visitors began the second half the same way as the first and this time took their chance. Lyle was again involved in the play, whipping in a dangerous cross from the right which was bundled home at the near post.Confusion surfaced as to who got the final touch as Dale Hilson ran away celebrating the goal, but it was credited to Thistle defender Lindsay as an own goal.Queen's should have doubled their lead with 13 minutes remaining as they struck the woodwork for a third time - Hilson hitting the inside of the post from inside the box with the goal gaping.The visitors were made to pay for their missed opportunities. Erskine found the bottom left corner with a precise finish following a scramble in the box before Lawless completed the comeback for Partick when he volleyed home in the dying seconds.ends

          Hibs have to settle for third place in Championship despite victory

          Hibernian missed out on second place in the Ladbrokes Championship on goal difference despite a 2-0 win over 10-man Queen of the South.Niklas Gunnarsson and Jason Cummings scored the goals but Alan Stubbs' men now face a two-legged quarter-final play-off against Raith after being pipped by Falkirk to second.James Atkinson in the Queens' goal had to be sharp to keep out early efforts from Liam Henderson and James Keatings.Gary Oliver had a great chance to put the visitors ahead 10 minutes before the break but he sliced his shot over the bar.Queens were reduced to 10 men nine minutes after the interval when Mark Millar was shown a straight red card for a tackle from behind on John McGinn.And Hibs made the extra man count when they opened the scoring in the 67th minute. Henderson got in behind the defence and cut the ball back for Gunnarsson to drill home.They made sure of victory 12 minutes from the end when Cummings headed home his 25th goal of the season from Martin Boyle's cross.

            Lowly Livingston's spot in Championship relegation play-offs confirmed

            Livingston's place in the Scottish Championship relegation play-offs was confirmed after a 3-1 defeat at 10-man Queen of the South.Queens came close to taking the lead in the 24th minute but Iain Russell saw his effort hit a post after being played clean through.Livingston made him pay six minutes later as Sam Stanton fired them ahead after excellent link-up play between Liam Buchanan and Jordan White.Charlie Telfer's 20-yard free-kick went just wide for Livingstone early in the second half before Queens equalised on the hour from the penalty spot.Morgyn Neill fouled Russell and Derek Lyle made no mistake for his 16th goal of the season before he doubled his tally nine minutes later from Mark Millar's cross.Gary Oliver extended Queens' lead 11 minutes from time from Dale Hilson's assist before they had Lewis Kidd (84) dismissed for two bookings in as many minutes.

              Dale Hilson's late header spared Queen of the South's blushes and earned a 2-2 draw against rock-bottom Alloa in the Scottish Championship.Alloa, already relegated to League One, took the lead eight minutes before half-time from the penalty spot after Jordan Marshall had fouled Mitch Megginson, with Iain Flannigan stroking home from 12 yards.Queen of the South levelled with a penalty of their own midway through the second half as Derek Lyle fired home from the spot after Iain Russell was fouled.Alloa, looking to finish the season with pride, restored their lead when Conor McManus fired home from the edge of the penalty area with 14 minutes to go.But Hilson headed home an 86th-minute leveller from Mark Millar's corner.

                Two late goals denied Falkirk from closing the gap on league leaders Rangers as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Queen of the South.With Rangers denied the Scottish Championship title by a last-gasp equaliser against Raith Rovers, Falkirk could have closed the gap to 12 points but for Iain Russell's late strike.Blair Alston had opened the scoring for the Bairns on the brink of half-time with his 10th league goal of the season, heading an Aaron Muirhead cross into the bottom corner.John Baird netted his 18th of the season shortly after the break to secure what should have been three points, until Derek Lyle pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute with a neat turn and finish.Russell was on hand to snatch a point for the hosts in extra time, sliding coolly under the onrushing Danny Rogers to frustrate Falkirk.

                  Leaders Rangers edge seven-goal thriller against Queen of the South

                  A early second-half goal blitz earned Rangers a 4-3 victory over Queen of the South to edge them closer to a return to the Ladbrokes Premiership.Englishman Harry Forrester got the ball rolling for the Light Blues with an early goal in what appeared to be a routine Rangers home victory.However, any chance of that was soon removed when Iain Russell slotted home a penalty on 25 minutes as the hosts began to look shaky.Rangers roared back into life during a crazy 10-minute spell at the start of the second half in which goals from Michael O'Halloran, Andy Halliday and James Tavernier fired them into a commanding lead.Mark Warburton's men will once again face questions about their defensive vulnerability though, as goals from Gary Oliver and Mark Millar made it a much tighter finish than it needed to be.Rangers made two changes from last week's defeat at Falkirk as O'Halloran and Forrester came in for Barrie McKay and Billy King who were on Scotland Under 21s duty in midweek.Lewis Kidd, Ryan Conroy, Russell and Andrew Dowie came into the team for The Doonhamers, who were missing Derek Lyle and Chris Higgins through suspension, while Rangers loanee Andy Murdoch was ineligible and Dale Hilson dropped to the bench.Rangers, roared on by a lively crowd, made a blistering start to the match and their early domination paid off on 13 minutes.A clever back heel from Halliday played in the lively Forrester down the right wing, who kept his composure to finish well with a low strike from inside the box.The vocal home support were silenced just 10 minutes later when Russell was scythed down inside the box by Rangers' skipper Lee Wallace.Russell duly slotted the resulting spot-kick home to send the teams in level at the break.Whatever Mark Warburton said at half-time clearly worked, as O'Halloran put them back in front just two minutes after the restart, firing home on the half volley from a Wallace cross.The reinvigorated Rangers team, playing with at noticeably higher tempo, flooded forward in waves of blue attacks and doubled their advantage just five minutes later when Halliday acrobatically struck home from a Kenny Miller cross to cap off a fine Rangers move.The Championship leaders were back in the groove, passing the ball slickly across the wet surface and made it 4-1 on 56 minutes when Miller once again provided the assist, this time nodding back across goal for Tavernier to slot home from close range.The early second-half goal glut continued, however this time it was the side from Dumfries who responded just a minute later, as former Hearts man Oliver slotted home after good work from Russell.Queen of the South made it a nervy finish for the home side when Millar beat Wes Foderingham with a low drive from outside the box in the 90th minute but Rangers held on to edge ever closer towards a return to top-flight football.

                    Queen of the South romp to win over Dumbarton

                    Queen of the South halted a three-match losing run in the Scottish Championship with a comprehensive 6-0 home victory against Dumbarton.Goals from Darren Brownlie and Derek Lyle just before half-time put the hosts in control and Lyle then struck again early in the second half. Alex Harris added his name to the scoresheet twice before substitute Iain Russell completed the rout.Dumbarton goalkeeper Jamie Ewings had been worked by Harris and Dale Hilson but there was little he could do to stop Brownlie's header after 34 minutes.Lyle then beat Ewings with a low, right-foot shot in the 43rd minute and did so again with 52 minutes on the clock to ensure Queen of the South would secure all three points. Christian Nade might have pulled a goal back but he dragged his shot wide. Gary Oliver, who set up Lyle's second goal, claimed two more assists as Harris struck in the 69th and 73rd minutes with efforts from inside the box. Harris then teed-up Russell to finish with two minutes left.
