Roberto Di Matteo has been backed to remain as Schalke coach, while the club have admitted that captain Benedikt Howedes could leave this summer.
The Italian joined the club in October 2014, replacing Jens Keller in the dugout, but has so far failed to impress with results aside from a thrilling but ultimately meaningless 4-3 victory at Real Madrid in Champions League.
Schalke have won just eight points from their last nine Bundesliga games, and are set to miss out on qualification for next season's Champions League.
With five games left to be played, Di Matteo's side only hold a four-point advantage on the clubs outside the Europa League ranks.
But despite a disappointing second half of the season, the club's sporting executive Horst Heldt has vowed to stick with the former Chelsea manager even if Schalke fail to qualify for Europe.
"I am convinced that we'll qualify for Europa League. And even should that not be the case, Roberto Di Matteo will remain our coach," Heldt said. "We have started a long-term project with him at Schalke."
Meanwhile, the future of club captain Howedes is still up in the air, with reports suggesting that the World Cup winner can trigger a €17.5 million release clause until the end of June.
Howedes, 27, who through the ranks of Schalke's youth academy, has made 190 Bundesliga appearances since debuting for the Royal Blues in 2007.
The centre-back has grown into of the leaders at the club, but in recent weeks several reports have suggested he could leave the club this summer.
Howedes is under contract at Schalke until 2017, but Bild reported on Wednesday that he has a €17.5 million release clause -- which can be activated until the end of June -- that will go down to €12.5 million next summer.
The player himself has in the past flirted with a Premier League move, while reiterating in several statements that he wants to focus on the Bundesliga run-in before thinking about his future.
Speaking to the German tabloid, Schalke chief Clemens Tonnies admitted that losing Howedes in the summer is an option, saying: "Should he leave, I will shed a tear."
Last week, Heldt told kicker that he felt Howedes could stay at Schalke, but added: "You can't rule out the opposite should an appropriate offer come in."
