        Southport hold League One Fleetwood to earn FA Cup replay

        Jimmy Ryan came closest to breaking the deadlock but Fleetwood Town had to settle for a 0-0 draw with National League Southport in their FA Cup first-round clash at Haig Avenue.The midfielder's 25-yard free-kick was tipped on to the Southport crossbar by Magnus Norman early in the second half and Martyn Woolford saw his follow-up blocked as the hosts held on for a replay against a team 56 places above them in the football pyramid.The Sandgrounders also weathered a late storm as, deep into injury-time, Cian Bolger had a free header but could only nod Kyle Dempsey's corner wide, meaning the sides will do it again to earn a second-round trip to Shrewsbury.The hosts edged a scrappy first half that was short on quality but high on intensity. Andrai Jones had their only effort on target but his tame attempt was comfortably saved by Chris Neal.Ryan was the driving force for Fleetwood in the second period, seeing a fierce shot saved minutes after he cracked the crossbar.Southport almost grabbed a late goal but Liam Nelson scooped an 89th-minute effort over the bar from close range before Fleetwood went straight up the other and substitute Devante Cole was denied by a sprawling save from Norman.

          Martin has Southport smarting

          Non-league Southport suffered FA Cup heartbreak when a penalty deep in stoppage time gave Championship promotion contenders Derby a 1-0 victory in the third round tie at the iPro Stadium.The Vanarama Conference strugglers looked to have earned a replay but in the third minute of added time, skipper Luke Foster brought down Johnny Russell and Chris Martin made no mistake from the spot.That was cruel on Southport and their goalkeeper David Raya Martin, who had made a string of magnificent saves to frustrate Derby and head coach Steve McClaren - who made nine changes.Even so, there were still five full internationals in the Derby line-up which highlighted the size of the task facing the team 89 places below them in the football pyramid.However, the 2,700 visiting fans were given early encouragement when a weak header by Lee Naylor let in Mitchell Austin in the fifth minute, forcing Derby keeper Kelle Roos to dive at his feet to push the ball away.Southport threatened again in the 11th minute when Paul Rutherford got behind Derby on the left only for his cross to be blocked - but Derby should have scored in the 20th minute when Leon Best blazed wildly over from eight yards out after Craig Bryson's low cross-shot had come back off Raya Martin's post.Bryson was becoming increasingly influential and it needed an excellent tackle from Scott Kay to deny the Scottish midfielder when he darted through onto Omar Mascarell's pass in the 28th minute.Another precise pass by the on-loan Real Madrid player put Best clear on the half-hour but he had strayed offside and Bryson was through on the right two minutes later, only to slip as he shaped to cross.The pressure was building and Raya Martin had to dive to his left to keep out a 25-yard drive from Paul Coutts in the 35th minute, before Simon Dawkins shot over from the edge of the area five minutes later.Derby wasted another great chance in the 42nd minute when Dawkins and Naylor combined down the left - but Ryan Shotton put his header wide from six yards.Southport had been on the back foot for long periods but they were still in the tie at half-time and Derby were given a warning in the 58th minute when a deflected cross gave Richard Brodie a chance - but he could not get enough power on his header.The visitors went close again two minutes later when Kay had a shot blocked and it was a sign of Derby's increasing anxiety when McClaren made three changes in the 63rd minute.The Rams still could not break Southport down and the outstanding Raya Martin made another superb save in the 78th minute when he flew to his right to parry a Jake Buxton header.However, Southport's resistance was finally broken when Russell was caught by Foster and although Raya Martin went the right way, Martin's penalty was too powerful and Derby breathed a huge sigh of relief.

            Port storm into third round

            Micah Evans' second-half strike secured Southport's place in the FA Cup third round for the first time in 16 years after a 2-1 victory over 10-man Eastleigh.Southport, quarter-finalists in 1931, initially fell behind but Dean Beckwith's red card just after half-time, with the scores at 1-1, proved costly for Eastleigh as Evans fired home the winner with 19 minutes remaining.After penalty appeals for both sides early on, Eastleigh made the breakthrough five minutes before the break.Southport keeper David Raya Martin raced out of his penalty area only to be outpaced by Craig McAllister, whose square ball was tapped home by James Constable.But the lead lasted only five minutes as in first-half injury time Richard Brodie drew the home side level with a diving header from close range.The Spitfires then had Beckwith sent off for bringing down Mitchell Austin in what the referee adjudged to be a goal-scoring position.And the Sandgrounders made the breakthrough on 71 minutes with Evans smashing home from 15 yards after the post had saved the visitors.Evans should have doubled his tally a minute later but he blazed over from close range and Ben Strevens almost made him pay but the Eastleigh striker's header hit the post late on.

              Southport put Daggers to the sword

              Southport shocked League Two side Dagenham as second-half goals from John Marsden and Danny Hattersley handed the Conference Premier outfit a 2-0 win in their FA Cup first-round replay.The Daggers had Luke Howell sent off just before the break and they were made to pay as Marsden and Hattersley struck to secure a second-round tie at home to Eastleigh next month.Dagenham striker Rhys Murphy hit the side-netting with a diving header in the fifth minute after getting on the end of a Damian Batt cross.Southport goalkeeper David Raya Martin then dived low to his right on the half hour to push away Jamie Cureton's goal-bound shot.But in the 43rd minute Howell was shown a red card for pushing Luke George in the face after taking exception to a tackle by the Southport player in the centre circle, and the game swung in the Sandgrounders' favour.Southport took the lead in the 50th minute when Paul Rutherford cut the ball back to Marsden whose shot found the net with the help of a deflection.Hattersley then doubled the hosts' advantage from the penalty spot in the 58th minute, sending keeper Mark Cousins the wrong way after Matt Partridge had tripped Marsden just inside the penalty area.

                Sandgrounders seal replay

                Southport forced an FA Cup replay against Dagenham as neither side could find the net at Victoria Road.The Vanarama Conference outfit will now host the League Two Daggers, who had the better chances and may feel their best chance on progressing has gone as a result.Southport had the first effort of note as Richard Brodie forced home goalkeeper Mark Cousins to tip over the bar.Jamie Cureton came close for Wayne Burnett's side 24 minutes in but his header from Ashley Chambers' cross took a deflection and went wide.Brodie continued to cause problems for the hosts and volleyed just wide before Dagenham had an excellent chance to take the lead before half-time.George Porter raced down the right but his cut-back was just behind Cureton and although the forward was in space, he could not get a clean connection on his effort.A minute after the interval, Burnett's team had another opportunity but Luke Howell poked wide from close range.Brodie nearly gave the Sandgrounders the lead in the 55th minute but his downward header was well pushed out by Cousins and it finished goalless.
