England vs. Japan result: Mitoma's strike enough as visitors claim victory -- as it happened

England were beaten at Wembley by Japan on Tuesday night as Kaoru Mitoma made history for the away side to secure their first ever win over The Three Lions.

The hosts welcomed back some of their big guns but were without Harry Kane and that showed as England were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.

It was the last chance for Thomas Tuchel to see if anyone could make a late push for a seat on the plane to the U.S., Mexico and Canada this summer as the countdown to the World Cup ramps up.

Here is how it happened.

Tuchel left out 11 players for the match against Uruguay with the goal of allowing them to recover after playing large amounts with their club sides this season.

Most of those are now back in the squad for selection, with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka the two who were sent back to Arsenal to recover from knocks.

Tuchel also sent Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Fikayo Tomori and Aaron Ramsdale back to their clubs, in a clear indication they will not make it into the squad for the summer.

Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, Arsenal's Noni Madueke and Manchester City's John Stones were also sent back to their respective clubs after picking up knocks in the draw with Uruguay or in training.

Ben White scored England's solitary goal against Uruguay in the friendly on Friday night, before Federico Valverde replied with a 94th-minute penalty.

Tuchel will name a 26-man squad for the summer.
