Edinson Cavani flattered by Atletico Madrid interest, plans PSG talks

Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani says Uruguay teammate Diego Godin has tried to persuade him to join Atletico Madrid and that he is flattered by the Spanish club's interest.

Cavani, 29, is reportedly a long-time target for Diego Simeone and he has again been linked amid speculation the Atletico coach is considering leaving unless the club make big-name signings this summer.

Cavani joined PSG from Napoli in 2013 for €60 million but has struggled to produce his best form, having regularly been fielded out wide to accommodate first-choice centre-forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who will leave this summer.

He said he would hold talks with PSG boss Laurent Blanc this summer before deciding his future but said is aware that there is interest from people at Atletico after speaking to Godin.

He told a news conference while with the Uruguay national team on Tuesday: "I have a contract at the moment with PSG, but first I must talk about certain things with the coach.

"The decision to stay or not is not down to just one person but should be between the coach and the player, with lots of factors on the table."

He added: "Atletico Madrid are a competitive team and have shown interest in me, which is nice as it makes me happy when teams show interest. Then you never know how far things will go.

"We are all friends in the national team and Diego [Godin] is in contact with us all, as he is the captain, and very close to all his teammates. Sometimes it is inevitable to speak about the club where he is. It is normal that he asks things about me. He has said it too in the media. It is nothing new."

He added on VTV Uruguay: "I spoke with Godin, he knows me, and he let me know that he would like me to go and join Atletico Madrid."

Godin told Cope's El Partido de las 12 radio show last month that he had regularly spoken with Cavani about playing together at club level and that the forward was a big fan of Atletico's style of play and did not think that financial issues would be a problem.

Cavani also spoke to Uruguayan outlet El Observador and indicated that he would not look to force his way out of Paris.

"I have a contract and I want to respect that," he said. "The club has shown me that they want me to stay. There are things we must talk about, but I like life in the city and there is a competitive team."
