PSG unlikely to sign N'Golo Kante, target signings in midfield, defence - source

Paris Saint-Germain want to strengthen their club in defence and in central midfield with more than three weeks until the French transfer window closes, but they have accepted that they are unlikely to sign N'Golo Kante from Chelsea, a source close to the club has told ESPN FC.

Premier League clubs have until Thursday afternoon to finalise deals while, like most of Europe, Ligue 1 has until the end of the month.

That has made it improbable they will land Kante, their priority midfield target, and with Julian Weigl likely to stay with Borussia Dortmund, PSG are placing greater importance on a contract extension for Adrien Rabiot than a new signing in that area.

According to the source, Rabiot is set for continued talks with the club after being won over by coach Thomas Tuchel in preseason.

In defence, sources indicate PSG have loosely agreed terms with their two top targets in Juventus left-back Alex Sandro and Bayern Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng, but the two players are yet to agree terms with their clubs.

Juve and Bayern are hoping to recoup at least €50 million, with PSG wanting to spend a combined €100m to land the pair. Manchester United, who sources told ESPN FC have also targeted Boateng, do not want to pay more than £50m to sign him.

With UEFA's review of a financial fair play (FFP) investigation still under consideration, and with no estimated date for a verdict, the source said the sales of Goncalo Guedes and Jese Rodriguez have taken on greater importance.

PSG want around €60m for Guedes, which is too high for Valencia, while the option of a Fiorentina switch for Rodriguez has dried up with the pending arrival of Marko Pjaca on loan.

Until either player is moved, the source said PSG are unlikely to push ahead with their planned business unless they are certain of where they stand with UEFA regarding FFP -- a strategy, sources say, they suspect has been designed to obstruct them this summer.

The inclusion of Valencia left-back Jose Luis Gaya in a potential deal for Guedes has not been ruled out by PSG sporting director Antero Henrique, but he would prefer Sandro and is reluctant to compromise.

AC Milan's Ricardo Rodriguez, who was a target as recently as early 2017, has not been completely disregarded by the club, but sources say he favours staying in Milan for at least another season.

Inter Milan's Dalbert Henrique and Bayer Leverkusen's Wendell are two other options, but Henrique wants to exhaust every possible avenue with Sandro first.

Elsewhere, a source close to Roma's Javier Pastore has confirmed that he will be at Parc des Princes on Sunday to say goodbye to PSG after his summer return to Serie A.
