With several matches postponed or canceled following positive COVID-19 tests at clubs across the league, Major League Soccer announced in October that it would use points per game to determine playoff places and the Supporters' Shield for the 2020 season.

The top six teams in the Eastern Conference have qualified for the MLS Cup playoffs, with clubs seeded seventh through tenth to square-off in a play-in round. The top eight teams in the Western Conference have qualified for the MLS Cup playoffs.
