Fabio Coentrao is set to miss the rest of the Ligue 1 season for Monaco and Portugal's European Championship this summer due to a thigh injury.
Coentrao, 28, injured his right thigh during training last week and will be out of action for between three to six months, Monaco said in a statement.
The left-back, who is on loan from Real Madrid, will undergo surgery in Finland next week.
The former Benfica player has been dogged by injury problems since moving to the principality last August. Coentrao played just eight Ligue 1 matches before Christmas after being sidelined in October and he then suffered a foot injury during the derby win over Nice in February.
He had made just one appearance earlier this month since recovering from that setback. In total, he has featured in 19 matches in all competitions for Monaco this season, scoring three goals.
Coentrao has netted five times in 51 games for Portugal but he played in only four of their Euro 2016 qualifying matches. His last appearance for the national team came in a 1-0 qualifying win over Denmark in October.
