Day 10 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup saw the final round of group games begin, with Ecuador watching their dreams go up in smoke after Kalidou Koulibaly's incredible goal sent Senegal through to the knockouts with a 2-1 win. The Netherlands did not break a sweat in their 2-0 win over Qatar that saw them top Group A. England also cemented top spot in Group B with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wales, while the USA eliminated Iran with a 1-0 victory.

By The Numbers has the best stats from the four World Cup matches played on Tuesday:

Ecuador 1-2 Senegal

1

Ecuador is the first CONMEBOL team to win its opening match of a World Cup and not reach the knockout stages since Argentina in 2002. Prior to that, only four South American nations had done so - Brazil (1966), Argentina and Uruguay (1962), Chile (1930).

1

Senegal ended a run of 21 games without a win (17 losses, 4 draws) by African sides against South American teams at the World Cup. The last African nation to win was Cameroon, defeating Colombia 2-1 in the 1990 World Cup

1

Kalidou Koulibaly's goal was his first in 66 appearances for Senegal. Only goalkeeper Tony Mario Silva (84 appearances) went longer without scoring. Aged 31 years and 162 days, Koulibaly is also the oldest player to score for Senegal at a World Cup.

2

Senegal reached the Round of 16 for only the second time in their history. They first did it in 2002, when current Senegal coach, Aliou Cissé, captained the team. Senegal joined Ghana (twice) and Nigeria (thrice) as the only African nations who've made it to the knockouts multiple times.

4

This was the fourth win by an African nation in the 2022 edition of the World Cup, tying the 2010 and 2002 editions for the most wins by African teams.

Netherlands 2-0 Qatar

7

Qatar also finished with the worst tallies of any host nation ever, scoring only once and conceding seven goals. Their GD of -6 is the worst of any host nation as well.

1180

Frenkie de Jong scored only his second ever goal for Netherlands, the first coming in a Euro qualifier against Germany in September 2019, 1180 days prior to this one.

3

Cody Gakpo became the first Dutch player to score in all of Netherland's group stage games at a World Cup. Only James Rodriguez and Lionel Messi (both 2014) have done so for their nations in World Cups (since 2006).

9/9

Netherlands have a 100% record from progressing from the group stages of a World Cup, having done so in all of their nine attempts.

10

Louis Van Gaal is the first manager at a FIFA World Cup to go ten games without a defeat (7 wins, 3 draws).

Iran 0-1 USA

24y, 321d

The USA's starting lineup against Iran had an average age of 24 years, 321 days. It was the youngest lineup at the 2022 FIFA World Cup so far. Tyler Adams, aged 23, was also the youngest captain at the World Cup.

2

Matt Turner joins Jimmy Douglas (1930) as the only USMNT goalkeepers to have 2 World Cup clean sheets. Both had them at a single tournament - Douglas in 1930 and Turner in 2022. This was also the first time since 1930 that the USA managed consecutive clean sheets.

18

Iran have been eliminated in the Group Stage in all 6 of their FIFA World Cup appearances; Iran's 18 World Cup matches are the second-most by a team that has never advanced past the Group Stage. Scotland has the record with 23 games.

1

Christian Pulisic's goal was the first competitive goal he had scored for the USA in a game played outside the United States since his goal against Trinidad & Tobago in 2017 --the game that eliminated the USA from contention for the 2018 World Cup.

Wales 0-3 England

100

England brought up a century of goals at the FIFA World Cup, becoming the seventh nation to do so, joining Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Italy, France and Spain.

2

Marcus Rashford scored his first ever career brace for England. Only Harry Kane (51) and Raheem Sterling (20) have scored more goals for England than Marcus Rashford (18) among active players. Rashford also now has as many World Cup goals as Johan Cruyff and is the first Manchester United player to score thrice for England at a World Cup ... since Bobby Charlton in 1966. It's coming home?

9

Despite Gareth Southgate's reputation as a 'defence-first' manager, England's tally of 9 goals scored is their most ever in a group stage of a World Cup. They scored 8 in their first three games in the 1954 and 2018 editions.

3

Harry Kane is the first English player to assist three goals in a single World Cup since David Beckham in 2002.
