Lionel Messi scored the fastest goal of his career and went on to net his 100th Champions League goal as Barcelona beat Chelsea 3-0 at the Camp Nou to reach the quarterfinals 4-1 on aggregate on Wednesday.
Messi slipped the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois just two minutes and eight seconds into the game for his 99th strike in the competition.
He beat Courtois again in the second half to become the second player after Cristiano Ronaldo to score a century of goals in Europe's top international club tournament.
Messi has scored more than 600 goals for club and country but he has never found the net in the opening two minutes, although he has now struck in the third minute four times in competitive games.
His previous fastest goal came after two minutes and 26 seconds, for Argentina against Nigeria at the 2014 World Cup.
He beat his record for Barcelona by 28 seconds, after scoring in 2:36 against Racing Santander in La Liga in August 2010.
His previous fastest in the Champions League had come in 2:46 against Celtic in 2016.
Messi also scored in the third minute against Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup in Miami last summer, although that game does not count as an official competition.
The Argentina star reached his 100th Champions League goal in his 123rd game, 14 games faster than Ronaldo, who hit the landmark last April.
Ronaldo, whose Real Madrid side advanced to the quarterfinals last week, now has 117 Champions League goals in 148 games. The next highest scorer is Raul on 71 goals.
Messi had failed to score in the first eight matches of his career against Chelsea -- his longest run without a goal against any opponent -- but snapped that streak by scoring three times over the two legs in the round of 16.
