Holders Germany knocked out of Women's Euro; England advance

A late Denmark winner saw holders Germany eliminated from Women's Euro 2017 in the quarterfinals.

Germany, seeking their seventh European trophy in a row, took the lead through Isabel Kerschowski after only three minutes.

But an equaliser four minutes into the second half from Nadia Nadim gave Denmark new belief, and Theresa Nielsen sealed their win with a header inside the final 10 minutes.

Kerschowski's early strike, misjudged by keeper Stina Lykke Petersen, had seemed likely to herald a dominant performance by Germany, but they failed to capitalise on a hesitant start by their opponents.

Nadim made them pay by heading home at the far post, before the unmarked Nielsen completed the turnaround.

Meanwhile, Jodie Taylor struck again as England defied decades of history to reach the Women's Euro 2017 semifinals with a 1-0 victory over France in Deventer.

The result ended a winless run over France which stretched back to 1974, when England defeated France 2-0 in a friendly in Wimbledon, and they will face tournament hosts Holland on Thursday for a place in Sunday's final in Enschede.

Taylor slid the ball past Sarah Bouhaddi for her fifth goal of the tournament in the 60th minute to put England through, with the suspension of Jill Scott for the next round being the only disappointment for manager Mark Sampson.

In Sunday's other quarterfinal, Austria needed penalties to eliminate Spain after the game ended scoreless.

Laura Feiersinger, Nina Burger, Verena Aschauer, Viktoria Pinther and Sarah Puntigam all converted their kicks for the Austrians, while Silvia Meseguer missed for Spain, who fell 5-3.

On Saturday evening, Netherlands beat Sweden 2-0 thanks to goals from Lieke Martens and Vivianne Miedema.

Netherlands go on to face either England or France in the semifinals on Thursday.
