RB Salzburg beat Benfica for first UEFA Youth League title

RB Salzburg won their first UEFA Youth League title with a 2-1 defeat of Benfica in the final on Monday.

Jose Gomes opened the scoring for the Portuguese club, heading home Joao Filipe's free kick on 29 minutes.

Substitute Daka Patson answered with a header of his own in the 72nd minute, rising highest to meet Hannes Wolf's corner kick from the left.

And Alexander Schmidt secured the title just four minutes later -- the Austria youth international starting the move out wide then sweeping home Wolf's cut-back for the trophy-winning goal.

The Austrian side, who marched through the campaign undefeated, ended Chelsea's recent stranglehold on the competition with the triumph.

Chelsea had won each of the past two editions, but did not participate this season due to the senior side's failure to reach the 2016-17 Champions League and the academy team's elimination in the 2015-16 Professional U18 Development League 1.
