Liga MX's Tijuana parts ways with coach Gustavo Quinteros

Club Tijuana is searching for a new head coach after Gustavo Quinteros left the club ahead of the Liga MX 2020 Apertura, the club announced on Friday.

Quinteros only coached 10 Liga MX games for the border club, with his stint cut short after the season was suspended in mid-March and eventually canceled.

"We want to thank coach Quinteros and his staff for the time they've given to our club and wish them success in their future projects," read a short statement from Xolos, which didn't indicated whether Quinteros had resigned or been fired.

Quinteros' highlight was guiding Tijuana to the Copa MX final, where it will face Monterrey in September.

The Argentine hasn't been the only coaching casualty during the break in play in Liga MX, with Victor Manuel Vucetich leaving Queretaro on June 3.

The club was officially sold last Wednesday, although no new head coach has been appointed as yet and Vucetich wasn't convinced by the new direction of the club.

"On finding out everything that is coming, [the new ownership's plan] definitely wasn't a project for me, that's where stepping aside came from," Vucetich told ESPN on June 10. "The project wasn't convenient, it didn't interest me."

Xolos and Queretaro have a little over a month to make new appointments before the start of the 2020 Apertura, which begins on July 24 with teams following a strict sanitary protocol to minimize the risks of contagion of COVID-19.

Liga MX will resume with a new playoff structure that will see the top four clubs in the regular season advance to the quarterfinals, while fifth place down to 12th will play a elimination round of games to decide the other four quarterfinalists.

The elimination round will be one game only, with the team highest in the table hosting and penalties to decide which team goes through in case of a draw after 90 minutes.
