Doolan winner keeps Partick Thistle's survival hopes alive

Kris Doolan scored a second-half winner for Partick Thistle against Dundee as the Jags confirmed their fight for Ladbrokes Premiership survival will go to a play-off final with Livingston.The Maryhill men went into the last game of the season two points ahead of bottom side Ross County and knowing victory would secure their top-flight status for a while longer at least.Alan Archibald's men returned to the dressing room after a goalless first half to discover County were a goal to the good at St Johnstone which had the Jags, with their inferior goal difference to the Dingwall side, staring at the prospect of automatic relegation.However, in the 62nd-minute substitute Doolan, who had only recently replaced Ryan Edwards, scored a typical poacher's goal from inside the box to earn a 1-0 win, although Saints did their bit too by levelling late against County.Thistle will travel to Liv on Thursday with the return game in Glasgow next Sunday.Dundee fans were unhappy at the end of the game but they were safe from the threat of relegation and boss Neil McCann was able to give first starts to 19-year-old keeper Calum Ferrie and defender Daniel Jefferies with Genseric Kusunga and Roarie Deacon returning.For Thistle, Steven Lawless and Miles Storey came in for Doolan and Chris Erskine, who watched from the bench as the visitors almost took an early lead.However, Adam Barton's header from a Storey cross in the sixth minute brought a great finger-tip save from Ferrie, who then confidently punched clear the subsequent corner.The Taysiders looked the most likely to get the breakthrough.There was a penalty claim in the 25th minute when Dundee defender Cameron Kerr was bundled to the ground in a challenge by Storey but referee Steven McLean gave an infringement the other way.Five minutes later a left-footed drive from Paul McGowan was parried clear by Maryhill keeper Tomas Cerny, and soon afterwards the Dundee skipper was replaced by Randy Wolters after picking up an injury.It was at that point Thistle took over and just before the interval Barton failed to connect with Edwards' right-wing cross just eight yards from goal and when the ball fell loose, Storey dragged his shot wide.Minutes after the break, following a corner from substitute Blair Spittal - who had replaced Storey for the start of the second half - Ferrie made another fine save from Danny Devine's header with the home side surviving the corner.Doolan replaced Edwards in the 55th minute as Archibald reshuffled and the substitution paid off in dramatic style when Lawless played in the striker with a clever pass and the Jags' talisman slipped the ball past Ferrie to change the complexion of the afternoon.However, there was still work to do for the visitors as Dundee threatened in the tense final stages, with Cerny making a fine save at his near post from a Wolters drive.But the Maryhill side held out and after the Staggies slipped up, they now have a two-legged chance to retain their top-flight status.

Simon Murray strike leaves Ross County deep in danger

Ross County's survival hopes remain hanging by a thread after a 1-0 loss at home to Dundee.Results elsewhere in the Ladbrokes Premiership - with Partick Thistle losing to Motherwell - mean the Staggies remain two points away from a play-off spot and cannot escape the bottom two.Simon Murray grabbed the decisive goal at the Global Energy Stadium with just his third for Dundee and first since February, which means the visitors have confirmed their status in the top flight beyond all doubt.The defeat means County must beat St Johnstone on Saturday and hope Thistle fail to win if they are to avoid automatic relegation.The hosts flew out of the traps and were almost ahead after just 90 seconds, only for Billy McKay to be flagged for offside after stabbing in a free-kick at the far post.The Staggies stayed on top for the opening 15 minutes but missed the best chance of the half when Davis Keillor-Dunn's superb corner found Liam Fontaine at the back post. The defender ran on to the ball but could only volley wide before blaming the sun for getting in his eyes.Dundee slowly grew into the game and ended the first half on top, but it was a game low on quality and severely affected by a series of full-blooded challenges.The Staggies came flying out of the blocks again after the break and should have scored in the first minute of the half.Jason Naismith did well to lift a ball in to the far post from the byline to an unmarked Keillor-Dunn but the forward tried to volley in when he could have stooped to head it and the ball sailed well over the bar.They were made to pay and it was Randy Wolters - on his first league start since October - who created the goal.The winger delivered a wicked cross from the left that bounced in the six-yard box and Murray reacted quickest to flick the ball in with his head.Keillor-Dunn headed straight at Elliot Parish after drifting off his marker as the hosts threw men forward but they were struggling to make regular inroads as Dundee forced them out wide.Their best chance fell to the experienced David Ngog who sliced wide and Michael Gardyne was booked for diving in the box.Paul McGowan curled one against the bar at the other end and Murray missed a golden chance to wrap it up when one-on-one but the visitors held on to leave Ross County deep in trouble.

Dundee all but secure Premiership status with win over Hamilton

Dundee all but secured their Ladbrokes Premiership status following a 1-0 win over fellow relegation battlers Hamilton at Dens Park.The home side had the best of the first half and deserved the lead given to them by left-back Kevin Holt's 18th minute drive.Accies improved after the break but dramatically spurned the chance to level in the 86th minute when skipper Dougie Imrie saw his penalty saved by Dundee keeper Elliott Parish.With two post-split fixtures remaining Dundee are six points ahead of relegation play-off spot occupants Partick Thistle and with a superior goal difference, with bottom side Ross County a further two points adrift.Bottom side County and Thistle had fought out a 1-1 draw in Glasgow on Friday night, leaving a big incentive for both sides in this lunchtime kick-off on Tayside.Amid a scrappy opening to the game there was a long stoppage after Dundee's Mark O'Hara and Accies' Danny Redmond clashed heads, the former needing lengthy treatment before continuing.Holt's goal came courtesy of enterprising wide man Craig Wighton who, after taking a Glen Kamara pass on the left, got past Hamilton defender Shaun Want before cutting the ball back to the Dens Park defender.He drilled a left-footed shot past Hamilton keeper Gary Woods and into the far corner of the net for his second goal of the season.The Lanarkshire side, seemingly realising their predicament, forced a couple of corners in quick response but Dundee defended resolutely and finished the half strongly, with striker Simon Murray and defender Steven Caulker going close with headers.Hamilton replaced keeper Woods with Ryan Fulton for the start of the second half with Dundee's Lewis Spence on for O'Hara.In the 49th minute striker Rakish Bingham struck the outside of the post with a 25-yard free-kick, Darian MacKinnon went close with a drive from the edge of the box and then Parish blocked an angled drive from Bingham at his near post.In the 68th minute Accies substitute Antonio Rojano, on for Redmond, stooped to head a delivery from Kenny van der Weg inches past the post, a near miss that increased anxiety levels among the home fans, who saw Daniel Jefferies come on to make his debut for Deacon.Jefferies, however, conceded a penalty with four minutes remaining for barging striker Marios Ogkmpoe inside the box.But there were Dundee cheers of relief all round when Parish threw himself down to his right to block Imrie's spot kick which all but secured Dundee's status into the bargain.

Aberdeen end poor run of form with win over Dundee

Captain Graeme Shinnie scored the only goal of the game as Aberdeen laboured to end a run of four league games without a win, beating Dundee 1-0.As a result, they were able to close the gap to second-placed Rangers in the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership. Shinnie's goal came 10 minutes before the break, and was a welcome warmer at a frozen Pittodrie, where occasional flurries of snow were blowing in over the stadium. It was a quiet opening quarter to the match, with only Shinnie's seemingly-obligatory yellow card of note for the home side, while the best chance of the opening exchanges fell to Kevin Holt, who tried to catch Freddie Woodman out with a surprise lob after 16 minutes, but the on-loan Newcastle man was alert and untroubled. Aberdeen have found goals hard to come by in recent weeks, but Shay Logan thought he had opened the scoring after 22 minutes, his powerful right-footed shot looking destined for the net until Kenny McLean got in the way, the midfielder also adjudged to be offside in doing so. But it was Dundee who had the best opportunity so far on the half hour, as A-Jay Leitch-Smith found himself clear of the home defence to latch onto a ball over the top. He advanced on goal, but Woodman stood firm and blocked the striker's low shot. A minute later, the visitors clipped the crossbar from Roarie Deacon's free-kick from the right flank, though his delivery looked to be a cross rather than a shot. However it was the home side who would grab the opener. Ryan Christie's cross from the right tempted goalkeeper Elliot Parish from his line, but in trying to leap over two team-mates he couldn not grasp the ball, and Shinnie was on hand to fire home from 10 yards. And from the restart they came close to a second, winning the ball back from the restart and building a move down the right which eventually saw the ball drop to McLean who fired over from 20 yards. They continued to push after the interval, with Chidi Nwakali's long-range strike after 54 minutes forcing Parish into a parried save, with the keeper up quickly to deny Christie from the rebound. And Parish had to be alert again after 73 minutes as Christie's neat reverse set Stevie May free in the area, but the former Sheffield Wednesday and Preston man shot straight at the goalkeeper. The Dons had a late opportunity to make the scoreline a touch more comfortable, but Anthony O'Connor's injury-time header from Niall McGinn's free-kick flashed wide of the upright.

Dundee 0-4 St Johnstone

St Johnstone savoured an emphatic Tayside derby win as they ran riot to beat Dundee 4-0 in a Ladbrokes Premiership clash at Dens Park.Tommy Wright's men took apart Neil McCann's Dundee, who sank to 10th in the table following another home defeat.Saints went ahead through substitute Jordan Piggott's 24th-minute own goal and did not look back from then on, with Chris Kane's double and a further strike from Blair Alston ensuring a memorable day for the Perth side.Dundee knew a win here would see them leapfrog their opponents and they began the match brightly.AJ Leitch-Smith, who scored in stoppage time in their recent victory in Perth, released Jesse Curran, whose deep cross almost picked out Roarie Deacon. He could not quite connect at the far post.Saints were also attempting to attack at every opportunity and Liam Craig saw his free-kick well held by home keeper Elliott Parish, despite the slippery conditions.The hosts did suffer a blow shortly after as Lewis Spence was forced off injured to be replaced by debutant Piggott.Then, in the 24th minute, Dundee fell behind. Steven Anderson chested the ball down to captain Joseph Shaughnessy, whose cutback was directed towards goal by Murray Davidson, with Piggott having the misfortune to deflect the ball into his own net.A few minutes later, Saints full-back Scott Tanser struck Parish's left post with a curling free-kick after Deacon has been booked for bringing down Davidson on the edge of the penalty area.The visitors were in firm command so it was no surprise when they went further ahead in 37 minutes in simple fashion.Steven MacLean dispossessed Josh Meekings, who was trying to run the ball out of play, before Blair Alston squared perfectly for Kane to calmly roll the ball home the helpless Parish to spark jubilation among the travelling support.With just three minutes to go until the interval, Dundee were livid when Simon Murray was put clean through on goal and preparing to shoot when Tanser came sliding in to challenge him, but referee Craig Thomson saw nothing untoward.Sofien Moussa was thrown on at the start of the second half, at the expense of captain Cammy Kerr, in a bid to salvage something for the hosts.But it was the visitors who piled on more misery in the 64th minute. Kane was put clean through and his initial effort was saved by Parish, only for Alston to bury the rebound from close range.Two minutes later, Kane completed the rout. The big striker pounced on indecision within the Dundee defence and wasted no time in rounding Parish to sweep home and rubber-stamp the outcome.

Dundee 0-2 Motherwell

Craig Tanner netted his third goal against Dundee this season as Motherwell progressed to the William Hill Scottish Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory at Dens Park.But home goalkeeper Elliott Parish will bemoan his part in Dundee's defeat after allowing Tanner's 30th-minute strike to squeeze underneath his body and making a poor decision for the second goal.Parish raced off his line as two of his defenders seemed to be dealing with a hopeful ball over the top towards Curtis Main. As he ran out, the ball sailed past him after appearing to come off the head of Kevin Holt, although Main was credited with the goal.The 56th-minute goal killed off the contest and left Dundee to rue their wastefulness in front of goal, with Sofien Moussa the main culprit.Former Liverpool defender Steven Caulker watched from the stand after signing for Dundee on Thursday, while Simon Murray was cup-tied.Tanner was brought into a three-man Motherwell attack after Allan Campbell dropped out with a hamstring strain and he almost set up an opener inside two minutes. Tom Aldred hooked home from close range but Cedric Kipre had been flagged offside while heading Tanner's free-kick across the face of goal.Moussa headed wide and volleyed over with the first of his two chances before Main came close from 30 yards and Nadir Ciftci glanced a header just wide.Former Dundee United striker Ciftci was involved in the opener as he laid the ball off for Tanner 25 yards out. The ball bounced invitingly but Parish allowed the volley to slip underneath his body and into the net.Ciftci, who once bit Jim McAllister in a Dundee derby, was at the centre of a fractious spell of play before the break, being booked for a foul on Paul McGowan immediately after the hosts restarted. McGowan was also carded for his angry reaction.Ciftci escaped another card following a foul on Mark O'Hara amid strong appeals from the home fans, but Bobby Madden was equally lenient towards Genseric Kunsuga following a wild scythe and a body-check on the on-loan Celtic forward. The Dundee debutant also escaped a claim for a penalty-box handball.Holt, Glenn Kamara and Darren O'Dea were all off target from decent chances following Dundee set-pieces and Moussa made a mess of another opportunity just after the interval.O'Hara got Dundee's first shot on target from long range but Trevor Carson pushed the ball over and, when Moussa did get a shot on target after turning Kipre, the Motherwell goalkeeper produced a brilliant stop with his left hand.Motherwell soon accepted a gift to move two ahead and Carson was not troubled again, although Moussa, O'Dea and A-Jay Leitch-Smith missed decent chances.

Dundee 1-4 Ross County

Alex Schalk scored twice to end Ross County's long run without a win with a 4-1 victory at Dundee.The Staggies were without a win since the start of November - a run stretching 13 matches - and started the day six points adrift at the bottom of the Ladbrokes Premiership.Davis Keillor-Dunn opened the scoring before Kerr Waddell equalised, but Schalk struck twice and Tim Chow scored late on to give the visitors a first win since the start of November and breathe life into their fight against relegation.Right from the first whistle, County looked in a confident mood despite their recent run and they started the game on the front foot.Schalk was at the centre of things and almost got an assist in the second minute after holding the ball up in the area before Keillor-Dunn's curling effort was tipped over after a fine move.Schalk then bullied Kevin Holt into a mistake in the corner, before pulling the ball back to David N'Gog who spooned his shot over from close-range when he should have scored to give the visitors a deserved lead.That was as good as it got for either side in the first-half as Dundee slowly grew into the game but offered very little threat in front of goal.The second half started much the same as the first, and after Elliott Parish saved brilliantly from N'Gog, the deadlock was finally broken through the lively Keillor-Dunn.The winger picked the ball up from the corner and his curling effort dropped into the far corner to give the visitors a deserved lead in the 49th minute.It did not last long however as Dee scored with their first real effort on target.After winning a corner on the break, Paul McGowan swung a high cross into the box and Waddell climbed high at the back post to head down and into the bottom corner before the visitors turned the game on its head with two goals in quick succession.First Schalk latched onto a mistake from Lewis Spence at the back before finishing coolly. Three minutes later, a smart backheel from Keillor-Dunn played the attacker through and Schalk once again was clinical to open up a 3-1 lead and secure his second successive brace.Chow completed a convincing win with a fine finish through the legs of Parish to give Owen Coyle's side an important three points to close the gap at the bottom.

Hamilton Academical 1-2 Dundee

AJ Leitch-Smith's goal seven minutes into stoppage time snatched a 2-1 win for Dundee at Hamilton.Mark O'Hara's own goal had put the Dark Blues in trouble at the SuperSeal Stadium after just 90 seconds.But with Accies a man light after seeing David Templeton sent off for two quick-fire bookings, 18-year-old Matthew Henvey's first ever senior goal put them level with 13 minutes left before Leitch-Smith popped up at the death to claim the points for Neil McCann's sideThe result sees Dundee leapfrog Accies into ninth place in the Ladbrokes Premiership.The hosts were without Greg Docherty following his move to Rangers but Georgios Sarris was back on the bench after boss Martin Canning reversed his decision to banish the Greek from the club.Dundee had lost their four previous clashes with the Lanarkshire men and found themselves staring at a fifth inside two minutes.Kevin Holt misjudged the flight of Danny Redmond's free-kick as he nodded it back into traffic. O'Hara then compounded that blunder as he sliced his clearance into his own net.McCann would have been pleased to see his side respond encouragingly to that early setback.But their failure to make more of their chances yet again sent the Dens boss into a dark mood as he grumbled away on the touchline.The sight of Dark Blues frontman Faissal El Bakhtaoui getting in the way of team-mate Holt's goal-bound shot did not help.The reception El Bakhtaoui got from the home support was just as frosty when he went down easily while trying to turn past Alex Gogic inside the box.The 20 minute mark saw another opening as Gary Woods pushed Paul McGowan's shot back into the danger zone but Gogic cleared before Leitch-Smith could pounce.Hamilton came within a lick of paint of adding a second 11 minutes into the second period as David Templeton lined up a free-kick. He clipped a delicate strike over the wall but found himself foiled as it hit the inside of Elliot Parish's post before bouncing out.Sofien Moussa had the ball in the Accies net after 65 minutes but saw the goal chalked off after running offside to collect O'Hara's through ball.But the visitors found themselves playing against 10 men for the final stages as Templeton got his marching orders after first catching Glen Kamara with a late lunge after 68 minutes before tripping Scott Allan five minutes later.Dundee made the numerical advantage count with 13 minutes left as substitute Henvey levelled. Allan played a short corner to O'Hara before receiving it back and sweeping in for the on-rushing teenager, who calmly finished into the roof of the net.As the clock ticked past 90 Hamilton were out on their feet. They then found themselves down to nine men as Darian MacKinnon limped off.McCann's men sensed their chance and got it when Accies sub Marios Ogkmpoe tripped Allan out wide. A quick free-kick freed up Kamara who found Leitch-Smith to convert from close range.

Dundee 0-1 Hibernian

Hibernian bounced back from Sunday's derby disappointment with a 1-0 win over Dundee at Dens Park.Having been knocked out of the Scottish Cup by rivals Hearts, Hibs got their season back on track thanks to John McGinn's second-half strike.The midfielder netted his fifth of the season to edge a scrappy encounter, but the visitors needed a brilliant save from Ofir Marciano to help secure the points and stay five points clear of Hearts.Spurred on by Sunday's defeat, Hibs started the game on the front foot, but despite their good start it was Dee who had the first effort on goal as Faissal El Bakhtaoui hit a deflected cross on the turn and saw his effort well-saved low down by Marciano.McGinn almost got on the end of two openings as Hibs pressed at the other end, but once again against the run of play El Bakhtaoui threatened to break the deadlock after leaving Efe Ambrose in his wake, but saw his shot deflected behind after a driving run.Cammy Kerr diverted an Ambrose cross onto his own post but chances were few and far between in the first half, with the two sides cancelling each other out and it almost came as a shock when McGinn broke the deadlock seven minutes after the break.The midfielder had come in for harsh treatment from the Dee players, but he found himself in space for once as Vikintas Slivka's low ball was laid into his path by Simon Murray, and the midfielder took his time before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.Brandon Barker, the on loan Manchester City winger, had two brilliant chances to seal the win but his lack of goals this campaign showed as he lost composure at the crucial moment.First, after a brilliant run clear of the defence he shot wastefully into the side netting before hitting another tamely at the goalkeeper's legs when he should have scored.He was almost made to pay for his profligacy but for a magnificent diving save from Marciano, who got across brilliantly to claw away a goalbound Mark O'Hara header.Hibs should have been out of sight after Danny Swanson did brilliantly to pull a ball across the six-yard box but Murray and Martin Boyle both conspired to miss gilt-edged chances with 10 minutes to go.Matthew Henvey should have equalised in the final minute but headed wide when free in the area to the frustration of Neil McCann as the game fizzled out.

Dundee 2-2 Inverness Caledonian Thistle

Inverness striker George Oakley earned his side a William Hill Scottish Cup replay as his late goal sealed a 2-2 draw with Dundee at Dens Park.Despite Aaron Doran's early opener for Inverness, the hosts looked to have booked their place in Sunday's draw for the last 16 when a shot from A-Jay Leitch-Smith deflected in off Sofien Moussa for a leveller and and Mark O'Hara added a second.But Oakley's strike with just two minutes left means the teams will have to do it all over again in the Highlands on January 31.Dundee, who started without Celtic target Jack Hendry, looked sluggish from the kick-off and paid the price as they fell behind on the quarter-hour mark.Brad McKay's long throw caused panic in the Dark Blues defence, with Josh Meekings misjudging the flight. The former Caley Thistle defender's sliced clearance fell straight to Doran to volley home.That setback, though, did at least fire up the hosts as they poured forward in search of an equaliser.It took a crucial last-ditch tackle to keep the Highlanders' lead intact as Scott Allan and Paul McGowan combined to put in Moussa, with Brad McKay arriving just in time to deny the Tunisian before he could pull the trigger.Moussa did get a effort away when he met Allan's outswinging corner with a full-blooded header but it came back off the crossbar. Allan was again the creator with a defence-splitting pass for Leitch-Smith who should have done better than fire straight at Ridgers.It was only another case of weak finishing which meant Dundee did not go in at half-time two down though. Oakley found himself clean through on Elliot Parish but again failed to find a way past.It appeared as though it would be a costly miss as the leveller arrived within three minutes of the restart.On-loan Shrewsbury striker Leitch-Smith exchanged passes with Allan on the edge of the box before taking aim, with his strike ricocheting off Moussa and bouncing past the wrong-footed Ridgers on its way into the net.Inverness almost hit straight back but Parish did brilliantly to claw away Connor Bell's header.But once more Caley Thistle's failure to take their chances cost them as O'Hara put Dundee in front after 65 minutes.And it was an alarmingly simple goal from John Robertson's point of view. O'Hara robbed Iain Vigurs on halfway but was then allowed to stride forward unchallenged and rifle home from 18 yards.With the clock ticking down, Oakley squared it up again, prodding home as Dundee switched off just as Riccardo Calder swung in the ball from the left.
