Iraola 'thankful' to Anfield crowd after first UCL win (1:17)

Liverpool got their Champions League campaign off to the perfect start as they came from behind to beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 -- with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

The Reds fell behind in the first half to a Marcos Llorente goal -- his fifth against the club -- but rallied to turn it around.

Szoboszlai equalised just before half time, then Mac Allister hit a rocket from outside the box to put the hosts ahead. They then held on to secure the win in their Champions League opener.

Here's how ESPN rated Andoni Iraola's first Champions League match in charge of Liverpool.

Manager rating (out of 10)

Andoni Iraola, 7 -- The former Bournemouth head coach got his first Liverpool win last week with victory in the Premier League over Ipswich Town. Now, the Reds have two wins in-a-row and Iraola is bound to be a happy man. His side were surprisingly open defensively in the first half and played a dangerously high defensive line that Atlético exploited to open the scoring.

But Liverpool improved vastly in the second half and deservedly took the lead through Mac Allister's screamer. Whatever talk Iraola gave to the team at half-time must have worked. Despite pressure from Atlético's attackers, Liverpool remained composed and saw out the win with confidence.

Player ratings (1-10, 10 = best, 5 = average)

GK Alisson, 7 -- Made an excellent save from Julián Álvarez, who had caught the ball sweetly. Was beaten one-on-one by Llorente for Atlético's goal but the save against Álvarez more than made up for it.

RB Ronald Araújo, 7 -- We'll be talking about Araújo's lovely backheel for Szoboszlai's goal for a while. It was a thing of beauty and not something you'd expect from a defender. Other than that, wasn't to blame for Llorente goal and did his job decently.

CB Jérémy Jacquet, 6 -- Solid in defence and made a couple of important interceptions in the box to stop Atlético from scoring more than once. Building a nice partnership with Virgil van Dijk at the back.

CB Virgil van Dijk, 6 -- As usual, he was an imposing force at the back but Llorente was able to run past the Liverpool defence for his goal without too much trouble.

LB Milos Kerkez, 3 -- Not good enough for Liverpool tonight. He switched off and didn't stay with Llorente, which allowed the Spaniard to score at Anfield (again). Kerkez was a major reason as to why Liverpool appeared so open defensively at times.

CM Dominik Szoboszlai, 9 -- Arguably Liverpool's best player again. Controlled the tempo from midfield and scored the equaliser following a delightful backheel from Araújo. Szoboszlai runs the show for the Reds, week in and week out.

CM Alexis Mac Allister, 7 -- Scored an absolute rocket to give Liverpool the lead. It felt fitting that the Argentine was the one to score a goal like that after expressing his disappointment earlier this week that he has not yet been offered a new contract at the club.

CM Florian Wirtz, 5 -- Wirtz was decent but still seems to be struggling to really make the impact he was expected to in this Liverpool side. It feels like he should be pulling the strings in midfield but it isn't quite happening yet.

RW Bradley Barcola, 6 -- Had two huge chances to score his first Liverpool goal but didn't score either of them. Oblak denied him in the first half, then the former PSG winger spurned a brilliant chance in the second half as he rolled his effort wide of the post with just Oblak to beat following a lightning-quick run.

LW Rio Ngumoha, 6 -- The teenager is beginning to play more and more of an important role for this Liverpool team. Starting in the Champions League at 18 is nothing to be sniffed at and did well against a tough Atlético defence.

ST Alexander Isak, 5 -- Came into this game on a hot streak after three goals in his last two games but failed to get on the scoresheet today. Had a big chance within the first minute but pulled his shot wide of the post.

Substitutes (players introduced after 70 minutes = no rating)

Ryan Gravenberch, (On 69 for Mac Allister), 7 -- Was brought on to shore things up after Liverpool had taken the lead and helped to calm things down. Didn't have a huge amount to do but was tidy in possession.

Jeremie Frimpong, (On 60 for Ngumoha), 7 -- Came on to help Liverpool defend their narrow lead and did his job. Thought he'd scored when he rolled in the rebound following Jan Oblak's save from Muñoz but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Víctor Muñoz, (On 60 for Barcola), 7 -- Replaced Barcola when the big-money Frenchman came off with cramp. Forced Oblak into a save. Provided speed and skill for Liverpool on the right.

Kostas Tsimikas, (On 88 for Kerkez), NR

Lewis Koumas, (On 88 for Isak), NR
