Germany eased to a 7-1 win over Curacao to open their 2026 World Cup campaign in style.
What was billed as a David and Goliath clash proved to be just that, with the four-time winners having far too much for the smallest nation to ever play at the World Cup.
Germany came into the game having failed to make it out of the group stages in each of the last two tournaments.
But it took just six minutes for them to take the lead on this occasion, with a wonderful link-up between Florian Wirtz and Felix Nmecha seeing the latter slot it into the top right corner.
Germany continued to cause problems and came close on a number of occasions to scoring a second, before Curacao made history.
Livano Comenencia scored to level the clash, and in the process saw Curacao score their first ever World Cup goal. It very much came against the run of play though and by half time, Germany led 3-1, after goals from Nico Schlotterbeck and Kai Havertz.
And just moments into the second period, Jamal Musiala made it 4-1 to put the game to bed.
From then on, it was very much one way traffic, and Nathaniel Brown, Deniz Undav and Havertz again made it 7-1.
It is a result that gives Germany life, ahead of surely much more challenging matches against both Ecuador and Ivory Coast, while for Curacao, they will need to be much more compact.
