Former Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates footballer Marc Batchelor was shot dead outside his home in Johannesburg on Monday, police have confirmed.

The 49-year-old striker, who also played for Mamelodi Sundowns, was shot in his car. Another person in the vehicle was unharmed in the incident.

"He was attacked by two men who were driving a motorbike," a police spokesman told the South African Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday.

"He was about to drive into his premises. The suspects shot several times at him... at this stage, we are still investigating what the motive for the attack was and these suspects have not yet been identified."

The police also confirmed that no items had been removed from the vehicle, and that the other passenger was being interviewed as a witness.

Condolences poured in from around the South African football community, including from Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung.

"I am shocked to learn about the passing of former Kaizer Chiefs player Marc Batchelor," Motaung said via the club's Twitter account.

"On behalf of Kaizer Chiefs, I wish to express my deepest heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and the football fraternity. May his soul rest in eternal peace."
