An own goal in the last 10 minutes allowed Bidvest Wits a 'snatch and grab' win away at Orlando Pirates for their third win in as many games at the start of the new season and top place in South Africa's Premier Soccer League.

New signing Hashim Domingo's clever play coming in from the flank and then playing a square ball off the legs of Gladwin Shitolo settled the outcome in a match in which Pirates had dominated.

It add to an away win last week at Kaizer Chiefs in what is a major turn around in fortunes for Wits, who are bouncing back after a horror season.

Now the 2016-17 champions are back among the contenders while Pirates, for all their pre-season forays into the transfer market, have four points from their last three matches.

Vincent Pule, who joined Pirates from Wits in the off-season, struck the woodwork with a rasping shot in the 55th minute in the best effort for the home side, who were runners-up last season.

There were just two close-in chances in the first half and they both came from defensive slips.

The game was only four minutes old when Wits centre back Buhle Mkhwanazi missed a cross from the left and allowed Justin Shonga a shot at goal but Mkhwanazi's defensive partner Robyn Johannes managed to do enough in his attempt to tackle Shonga to put the Zambia international off and deny him what could have been an easy finish.

The near the end of the half, fullback Sifiso Hlanti's was disposed as he tried to clear to again set up Shonga on the break but Wits keeper Darren Keet came out to make a vital stop.

Wits were restricted to effort from outside the box for both Mxolisi Machupu and Gift Motupa, which were both close to the target.

The game at the Orlando Stadium was the only one in the PSL on Wednesday. On Tuesday Baroka drew 1-1 with Kaizer Chiefs and the league programme picked up again on Friday with as full set of weekend fixtures.
