Williams played in seven games with three starts as a rookie with Columbus in 2019. He made 23 appearances with Birmingham and scored seven goals.

"JJ is someone that had been on our radar over the offseason and we're pleased to add him to our roster," Atlanta United vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a statement. "He is coming off a strong season with Birmingham and will provide additional competition to our attack."

Williams was the No. 18 pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft following three seasons at the University of Kentucky.

Martinez, the 2018 league MVP and Golden Boot winner, suffered a torn right ACL in Atlanta United's season opener on Feb. 29.
