Melbourne Victory sign Denmark international Poulsen

Denmark international midfielder Jakob Poulsen has joined Melbourne Victory for the upcoming A-League season.

The 36-year-old, who played 35 times for his country, has signed on a one-year deal to continue his career in Australia after last playing for Danish Superliga club Midtjylland.

Poulsen's long professional career has featured stints in the Danish, Dutch and French football leagues, most notably with French Ligue 1 giants Monaco between 2012-14.

He was also a member of Denmark's 2010 World Cup squad in South Africa.

Victory head coach Marco Kurz said Poulsen's experience and leadership will be key assets as he prepares for his first A-League campaign at the helm of the club.

"It was important for us to bring in another leader -- someone who can perform under pressure, and set the standard for the other players alongside him," Kurz said.

"Jakob is not only a strong leader but is also very good technically, and poses a significant threat from set-pieces, something seen throughout his career and particularly as captain at Midtjylland."

Poulsen is one of several recruits at Victory, including Socceroos Robbie Kruse and Andrew Nabbout, and Kurz said his squad is almost complete with just one international spot remaining unfilled.

Victory face cross-town rivals Melbourne City in their A-League opener at Marvel Stadium on Oct. 12.
