Sources: Man Utd move for Mandzukic unlikely

Manchester United have cooled their interest in Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic, sources have told ESPN FC.

United are backing away from a deal because of the Serie A side's asking price and the Croatian's wage demands.

Romelu Lukaku is on the verge of a £72 million move to Inter Milan and Mandzukic has been discussed as a possible replacement, but an agreement for the 33-year-old is looking increasingly unlikely, with sources having told ESPN FC that United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is comfortable if another forward does not arrive before the transfer deadline at 5 p.m. BST on Thursday.

Solskjaer has been particularly impressed with 17-year-old Mason Greenwood since he scored twice on the preseason tour of Australia, the Far East and Norway, and is prepared for the teenager to play a key role next season.

Meanwhile, sources have told ESPN FC that Everton are interested in signing United centre-back Marcos Rojo.

Everton would like to sign the Argentina defender on loan, but United would prefer to negotiate a £25m permanent move.

Newcastle are interested in a move for United defender Phil Jones, sources have told ESPN FC.

The 27-year-old has fallen down the pecking order after the arrival of £80m centre-back Harry Maguire, and Newcastle are considering a loan offer for Jones if they can offload defender Ciaran Clark.
