Liverpool close to signing Ajax 16-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever - sources

LIVERPOOL -- Liverpool are hopeful of completing the signing of Netherlands youth international Ki-Jana Hoever, sources have told ESPN FC.

Hoever, 16, would join the Reds from the youth ranks at Ajax, where he played at Under-17s level.

The right-back has been training at Liverpool's Kirkby academy in recent days as he looks poised to join the Merseyside club.

He would start his career at Liverpool in the U18s working under new manager Barry Lewtas, who replaced Steven Gerrard last month.

Hoever has represented Netherlands at U15 and U16 level and moved to Ajax from AZ Alkmaar's academy back in 2014. Ajax declined to comment when approached by ESPN FC.

Liverpool have already recruited for their academy this summer with the signing of 17-year-old Bobby Duncan, cousin of Steven Gerrard, from Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have announced that they have brought forward their friendly with Tranmere Rovers to avoid any potential clash should England reach the semifinals of the World Cup.

The fixture, which is being hosted at Prenton Park, was scheduled to be on Wednesday July 11, but will now be played 24 hours earlier.

Liverpool play their first friendly of the summer at Chester FC on Saturday -- at the same time as England's quarterfinal clash with Sweden.

However, both clubs have confirmed that the date and kick-off time of that match will remain unchanged.
