Crew SC sign Pedro Santos from Braga as third designated player

Columbus Crew SC signed Portuguese midfielder Pedro Santos as a designated player on Tuesday.

Santos, 29, moves to MLS from Braga and joins Federico Higuain and Jonathan Mensah as the third DP on Columbus's squad, the first time the club has used all three DP slots.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Columbus said it was the biggest transfer fee paid in club history. Reports in Portugal said it was over $2 million.

"We are excited to welcome Pedro Santos to Columbus Crew SC and look forward to him making an immediate impact on this club this season," Crew SC coach Gregg Berhalter said in a statement.

"Pedro brings extensive tenure at a high European level and also has Europa League experience, which we believe will be an asset to Crew SC and will fit well into our style of play."

The winger has played for Braga since 2013, scoring 24 goals in 114 games in all competitions.
