Lazio's Ravel Morrison turned down loan to Salernitana - Claudio Lotito

Ravel Morrison refused a move to Serie B club Salernitana during the winter transfer window, according to Lazio president Claudio Lotito.

Lotito, who is also owner of the Campanian club, had tried to move Morrison and Edson Braafheid on to boost Salernitana's hopes of avoiding relegation to the third division this season, and to allow the pair to get a regular first-team football.

Morrison has made three appearances in Serie A this season while former Bayern Munich defender Braafheid came on just once in the 3-1 win at Fiorentina on Jan. 9.

"Braafheid and Morrison did not accept to come to Salernitana and I can't force them to accept," Lotito told Metropolis. "They are top quality players for that level, I would say they are Champions League material.

"I tried right up the closure of the transfer window, but I wasn't able to convince them. I had even promised them bonuses, but now they will stay with Lazio where they are not playing."

Morrison, formerly an England under-21 international and Manchester United midfielder, has struggled to play his way into coach Stefano Pioli's plans this season and is expected to leave the Italian club in the summer, despite having a contract in the Eternal City until 2019.
