Hamburg reveal Universidad de Chile want midfielder Marcelo Diaz

Bundesliga club Hamburg have confirmed that they have been contacted by Universidad de Chile over a possible move for midfielder Marcelo Diaz.

Diaz, 28, rescued Hamburg in the relegation playoffs last season when his last-minute goal secured extra time at Karlsruher and they went on to seal Bundesliga survival.

But this season the Chile international, who used to play for Universidad, has made only four starts and mostly been used as a late substitute.

Last weekend, Diaz voiced his frustration at the situation and said he wanted the club only months after joining from Basel in February.

"I play only 40 percent of the games -- I want to leave in the winter," the player, who has been linked with Werder Bremen, told football magazine kicker.

And on Friday, Hamburg sporting director Peter Knabel told Bild: "There has been an approach from the Chileans. But we don't want to start a debate now, and will also not haggle over a price."

The paper said Hamburg, who had a €16.9m deficit for last season, would not sell Diaz for less than €2m -- the fee they paid for him in February.
