Remi Walter's go-ahead goal powers Sporting KC past Montreal

Sporting (5-11-4, 19 points) also won its first match against an Eastern Conference opponent after going 0-4-2 to start the season.

Walter put Sporting KC ahead just past the two-thirds mark of the match. Kayden Pierre had an excellent throw-in, finding Khiry Shelton open down the right side. Shelton appeared to miss teammate Daniel Salloi in the box, but Walter came from well outside the box and fired it home.

Montreal (9-8-2, 29 points) had plenty of opportunities to level the match. They held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks, which led to a 16-6 advantage in shots.

Montreal scored first on a beautiful feed from Lassi Lappalainen to Romell Quioto for a goal in the 13th minute. Lappalainen dribbled into the box around SKC defender Ben Sweat. He then crossed it to the left side of the attacking zone to an unmarked Quioto, who headed it in.

Sporting leveled the match in the 29th minute.

Roger Espinoza deflected a pass deep in his own territory. He chased down the ball and controlled it between two defenders inside the center circle before taking a left-footed shot from about 40 yards out that sailed over keeper Sebastian Breza into the lower right corner of the net.

It marked the first time this season that Sporting had even been able to level a match after conceding the first tally of the match.

Montreal dominated the stat sheet in the first half. It held 62 percent of the possession and outshot Sporting 8-4 with a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. It also had the only three corner kicks.

But the only stat that truly mattered was the 1-1 score at half-time.
