Dynamo snap losing skid with win over Fire

Darwin Quintero found the back of the net for the sixth time this season as the Houston Dynamo cruised to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Chicago Fire on Saturday night.

Quintero now leads the team in goals along with Sebastian Ferreira.

Thorleifur Ulfarsson added his second goal in just his fourth start for the Dynamo (6-7-3, 21 points), who snapped a two-match losing streak and won at home for the first time since May 14.

Steve Clark made four saves for Houston, which has now kept a clean sheet in each of its last three victories.

Gabriel Slonina made three stops in goal as the Fire (3-8-5, 14 points) failed in their bid to win back-to-back games for just the second time this season.

Chicago midfield Xherdan Shaqiri missed his second consecutive game, this time due to a late illness after a thigh issue kept him out of last weekend's 1-0 home win over D.C. United.

The Fire outshot Houston 17-11 overall, though the quality of their chances was often lacking. Still, Chicago was arguably the better team early before it was punished by Ulfarsson in the 23rd minute.

Memo Rodriguez found space at the right flank and spotted Ulfarsson at the back post with a long cross.

Ulfarrson headed his first attempt against the back of Boris Sekulic, reached the rebound and then took a shot that deflected off defender Carlos Teran on its way over Slonina and into the net.

Slonina made up for it, making a fabulous sprawling save in the 45th minute to deny Ferreira of his seventh goal of the campaign.

But he couldn't bail out his defense again in first-half stoppage time when Quintero took Adam Lundqvist's early cross from the left, dodged past Rafael Czichos toward the six-yard box and fired a low finish inside the far left post.

Ferreira had an apparent third Houston goal correctly disallowed for offside following a video review shortly after halftime.
