Late Toronto tally forges draw with Atlanta United

Atlanta United left points on the table thanks to a late goal from visiting Toronto FC in a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Atlanta (12-9-11, 47 points) is 2-0-2 in its past four, while Toronto (6-17-10, 28 points) has played to draws in each of its past three games.

United outplayed Toronto in the first half, but the home side struggled to get shots off and finish off plays. Atlanta had 10 shot attempts in the half but only three reached the target.

Luiz Araujo capitalized on slow play by goalkeeper Quentin Westberg to put Atlanta ahead 1-0 in the 15th minute. Araujo sped down the right side past a Toronto defender towards Westberg, who tried to settle the ball to the right of the net to clear it, but Araujo got his foot on it first to easily deposit it into the open cage.

Forward Jayden Nelson had Toronto's best chance of the half two minutes later with a shot from the left side of the goal area, but Brad Guzan came up with the save.

In the 20th minute, Josef Martinez had a chance with a strike from the box off a feed from Marcelino Moreno, but Westberg tipped it away from the net.

Moreno came within inches of doubling Atlanta's lead in the 33rd minute as he drove down the right side, but his shot rolled just past the far post.

Nelson used his speed to deny another United opportunity in the 44th minute, hampering Ezequiel Barco as he tried to get good position for a shot from the box.

Martinez was in disbelief on a missed opportunity in the 51st minute when his shot off a cross from defender Brooks Lennon sailed over the net.

Barco scored in the 55th minute, but the goal was flagged for offside.

Jordan Perruzza scored his first goal in MLS off a header pass to tie it 1-1 for Toronto in the 89th minute.
