Daniel Salloi's brace helps Sporting KC get past FC Dallas

Daniel Salloi scored twice and Johnny Russell added a goal on a penalty kick as Sporting Kansas City returned to its winning form with a 3-1 win over short-handed FC Dallas on Wednesday in a Western Conference match in Frisco, Texas.

The win put Sporting KC (14-6-7, 49 points) into first place in the West standings temporarily, but the Seattle Sounders won later Wednesday, defeating San Jose 3-1 to lead the West by two points. SKC has won three of its past four matches and has seven matches remaining in its regular-season schedule, with its next two matches against teams that are below the playoff line.

Salloi got Sporting KC on the board in the 13th minute, taking a pass from Luis Martins five yards outside the box and ripping a right-footed shot into the top-right corner past Dallas keeper Jimmy Maurer.

Dallas' Bryan Acosta was sent off for a foul against Khiry Shelton just inside the penalty area in the 52nd minute, forcing FCD to play the final 38 minutes with just 10 men.

Russell stepped to the spot three minutes later and beat Maurer with a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner to push Sporting KC's lead to 2-0.

Salloi all but finished off the home side in the 61st minute, scoring to the upper-left corner after an assist from Jose Mauri. It was the 15th tally of the year for Salloi, who is now second in the league in goals scored, two behind D.C. United's Ola Kamara.

FC Dallas (6-13-9, 27 points) dropped its third straight, is winless in it past six games and is 2-6-3 in its past 11 matches, with both of its wins in that span coming against expansion Austin FC, the last-place team in the West.

Ricardo Pepi's goal in the 68th minute allowed FC Dallas to avoid the shutout. Pepi's tally was assisted by Ryan Hollingshead.

Dallas is well below the playoff line, but four of its next five games are at home, prompting some sense of hope for a strong finish.

SKC's win allowed it to capture the season series after the teams split their two matches earlier this season.
