Paxton Pomykal, Jesus Ferreira on target as FC Dallas defeat Sporting Kansas City

Paxton Pomykal scored early in the first half and Jesus Ferreira scored early in the second as FC Dallas handed Sporting Kansas City a rare home loss, 2-1, on Saturday night.

The loss was Sporting's first at Children's Mercy Park this season (5-1-2). Sporting manager Peter Vermes made his return to the sideline after missing the last two matches with COVID-19.

Holding a 1-0 lead, Dallas scored almost as quickly in the second half as they did in the first half and did so in similar fashion. After a takeaway, Szabolcs Schon fed Ferreira, who right-footed it past SKC keeper Tim Melia in the 51st minute.

Johnny Russell's goal in the 85th minute drew SKC within one, but despite out-shooting Dallas 20-12, Sporting left without a point.

FC Dallas earned a much-needed three points on the road in a place where they've had recent success. They're still below the red line, but that line is in sight.

FC Dallas head coach Luchi Gonzalez remained undefeated against Sporting KC. Gonzalez took over in 2019 and has registered a 5-0-1 record against Sporting, including a 3-0-1 record against SKC at Children's Mercy Park.

Sporting KC missed an opportunity to grab the top spot in the Western Conference. After Sporting handed Seattle its first home loss of the season last Sunday, the Sounders suffered their second straight loss at Lumen Field on Saturday. But SKC could not take advantage.

Dallas scored in the third minute. Russell lost possession at midfield and Dallas moved it up field. Ryan Hollingshead found Pomykal in the middle of the offensive zone, just outside the box, and Pomykal fired it past Melia into the lower-left corner of the goal.

Dallas controlled the first half, especially the first 30 minutes. They had twice as many shots and shots on goal as SKC, with the only one to find the back of the net. Sporting was not as organized in the offensive end.

Sporting started to put it together in the final 15 minutes and ended the half with the same number of shots.
