San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders play to scoreless draw

Goalkeeper Stefan Frei posted a shutout in his 250th career appearance for Seattle as the Sounders played to a 0-0 Major League Soccer draw against the host San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday night.

The defending MLS Cup champion Sounders remained tied atop the Western Conference with Portland. The Timbers had a chance to move in front, but allowed a goal in second-half stoppage time Sunday in a 1-1 tie with visiting LAFC.

Seattle also extended its unbeaten streak to 12 matches (6-0-6) against the Earthquakes, dating to 2015.

Frei was credited with one save. It came in the 64th minute, after a Seattle turnover in its own end of the field. Andres Rios' cross from the right wing found Carlos Fierro at the top of the 18-yard penalty area in the middle of the field, but his shot toward the lower corner of the net was pushed wide of the goalpost by Frei.

Frei also got a little defensive help from forward Will Bruin in the 42nd minute. A free kick from about 35 yards out went to Chris Wondolowski, MLS' all-time leading scorer, at the top left of the 6-yard box. Wondolowski's header across the goalmouth seemed destined for teammate Andy Rios near the far post, but Bruin stepped in front and knocked the ball away, preventing an almost sure goal.

San Jose goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski also made one save in improving to 4-1-2 this season. He made a sprawling stop to his left on a 17-yard shot by Seattle's Nicolas Lodeiro in the 6th minute.

The Earthquakes, who went winless in their first eight matches after the MLS is Back Tournament, won four of five entering the weekend to move into playoff position. Sunday's draw pulled them even in points with Minnesota and Dallas for fifth in the West.
