Alexander Isak impresses as Sweden edge past Slovakia

A late Emil Forsberg penalty put Sweden on the brink of qualification to the knockout phase as they temporarily went top of Group E after they edged to a 1-0 win over Slovakia in Saint Petersburg on Friday.

Sweden's young star Alexander Isak put in another impressive performance, acting as a lone bright spark in an otherwise quiet affair for his side. The Real Sociedad striker was his country's most dangerous player during the 0-0 draw against Spain in their Euro 2020 opener.

Chances were few and far between for either side in the first half as Slovakia dominated possession but failed to pose a threat.

Sweden's Ludwig Augustinsson managed to fire a powerful header on goal on the hour mark, forcing Slovakia goalkeeper Martin Dubravka into a fine one-handed save.

Isak set in Sweden teammate Robin Quaison on 75 minutes, who was brought down by Dubravka before winger Forsberg slotted the ball home from the penalty spot. It was only the third spot kick scored at the tournament from five awarded.

Having won their opening game against Poland, Slovakia still have a chance to progress to the knockout stage even as they face group favourites Spain in their final game on Wednesday.

Spain when face Poland in their second match in Seville on Saturday.
