Greenwood strikes again as United beat Inter

SINGAPORE -- Mason Greenwood further boosted his chances of starting the opening game of the season against Chelsea by scoring for the second game in a row as Manchester United beat Inter Milan 1-0 at the National Stadium in Singapore.

The 17-year-old, who got his first senior goal in the win over Leeds United in Perth, came on in the second half to fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side in front on 75 minutes in a game that also saw Ashley Young booed by United fans and Victor Lindelof limp off with a hamstring injury.

"I think we got what we asked for. The conditions were tough but we pressed well. In the first half it was the final little bit that was missing," Solskjaer said after the game.

"I was thinking 'I like this', the boys are enjoying their football and this is what we're about.

"He's [Greenwood], a natural finisher; a natural goal scorer. He's only 17 but why not enjoy his football? He'll get a few goals.

"You can see the confidence in the kids when they get minutes under their belts. Maybe the last two or three years they've been looking up to the first team, but now they're with them."

During the build-up dominated by Romelu Lukaku's future, Solskjaer suggested he could hint at how his team will look on the opening day of the Premier League campaign against Chelsea. He picked a strong side to play Inter, which included new signings Dan James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka and goalkeeper David De Gea for the first time this summer. Lindelof started alongside Axel Tuanzebe in the centre of defence with full-backs Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw either side.

Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic began the game in midfield behind a front four of James, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and central striker Anthony Martial. All except Lindelof played for 60 minutes after the bulk of the squad were limited to 45-minute spells in the opening tour games against Perth Glory and Leeds.

When Solskjaer finally made wholesale changes, the game was still goalless although Matic had come close with a header that hit the post. Young's introduction was greeted with boos by large sections of the 52,897 crowd but it was Greenwood's entrance that had the biggest impact.

After scoring a tap-in against Leeds, his strike against Inter was more eye-catching, showing quick feet to work a yard of space in a crowded penalty area before smashing his finish into the far corner.

It almost got even better for Greenwood moments later but saw his flick on Tahith Chong's cross hit the bar as United maintained their winning start to the summer.
