Dynamo's Manotas, Rapids' Rubio score twice in draw

Mauro Manotas scored goals five minutes apart late in the second half to rally host Houston to a 2-2 tie against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday to end a four-game losing streak in the debut of Dynamo interim coach Davy Arnaud.

Houston (9-13-4, 31 points) trailed 2-0 on a pair of first-half goals by Diego Rubio before Manotas tallied in the 74th and 79th minutes.

Colorado (7-13-6, 27 points) has a loss and draw after winning two straight.

Manotas scored on the counter to make it 2-1, finishing a long ball from Adam Lundkvist. His 11th goal of the season tied it. He took a cutback pass by Tommy McNamara and beat goalkeeper Clint Irwin from the middle of the box.

Houston, which ended a three-game home losing, is 2-11-2 in the past 15 games after a 7-2-2 start. The skid cost coach Wilmer Cabrera his job on Tuesday and Arnaud, an assistant the past three years for the Dynamo, was promoted.

Rubio scored in the 7th and 38th minutes to give the Rapids the two-goal advantage.

On the first goal, Sam Nicholson played a ball into space, and Rubio ran onto it and pushed a shot to the far netting.

The second goal was a gift. Houston defender Maynor Figueroa tried a back pass, and Rubio was there for the turnover. He dribbled into the box and then went around goalkeeper Joe Willis before depositing the ball into the net.

Rubio has a career-high nine goals, eight of which have come in the past 10 games. He had eight goals for Sporting Kansas City last season.

Willis made what ultimately was a key save on Nicholson in the second minute of first-half stoppage time to keep Houston within two goals.

Colorado plays at Real Salt Lake on Aug. 24. Houston is at FC Dallas on Aug. 25
