Howard closes MLS career with Rapids' win over FC Dallas

Tim Howard had three saves in the final home game of his MLS career, and Jack Price, Diego Rubio and Kei Kamara scored goals to lead the Colorado Rapids to a 3-0 victory over FC Dallas on Sunday night in Commerce City, Colo.

It was the fifth shutout of the season and 38th in his MLS career for the 40-year-old Howard, who announced that he would retire at the end of the season. Howard, who starred in the English Premier League with Everton and Manchester United before joining the Rapids in 2016, started for the U.S. men's national team in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups and was playing in his 184th MLS game.

Jesse Gonzalez had seven saves, including a stop on a penalty kick by Kamara in the 40th minute for FC Dallas (12-12-9, 45 points), who remained in the seventh and final Western Conference playoff spot despite the loss. Dallas sits one point ahead of San Jose (13-15-5, 44) and three points in front of Colorado (12-15-6, 42).

The Rapids, who won for the fifth time in their last six games, took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when Price curled in a shot from outside the middle of the box inside the right post for his first goal of the season.

FC Dallas had a chance to tie it in the 31st minute, but Howard made a diving save on Jesus Ferreira's shot from the middle of the box.

Colorado increased its lead to 2-0 in first-half stoppage time on Rubio's 11th goal of the season on a free kick from the top of the box. Price faked like he was going to take the shot before turning away, and Rubio then followed him and blasted a right-footed shot through a gap in the wall and into the left corner.

After Howard made a leg save on a point-blank shot by Michael Barrios in the 49th minute, Kamara made it 3-0 with his 13th goal of the season in the 72nd minute, tapping in a left-footed shot off a nice Nicolas Mezquida feed into the right corner of the net.
