Mane double sees Liverpool past Bayern Munich into quarterfinals

Sadio Mane scored a goal in each half as Liverpool beat Bayern Munich 3-1 in their Champions League round-of-16 second leg to book a spot in the quarterfinals.

The two teams had it all to play for after their first meeting at Anfield ended in a goalless draw and Liverpool were forced into a quick change inside of 15 minutes when Fabinho replaced Jordan Henderson after the captain collided with James Rodriguez and picked up an injury.

The game sprang to life after the 20-minute mark and it was Liverpool that drew first blood when Mane expertly settled a Virgil van Dijk long ball, spun back to his right and chipped into an open net after Manuel Neuer was drawn off his goal line.

Bayern hit back before the break, though, when Joel Matip redirected a Serge Gnabry cross into his own net after the winger beat Andrew Robertson to a long ball down the right flank as the teams went to the dressing room tied 1-1.

Liverpool had the better of the opening minutes of the second half, but it was the hosts that came closest to scoring just after the hour mark when Gnabry crossed for Robert Lewandowski only for the ball to be just out of the Bayern striker's reach mere yards from the Liverpool goal.

Eight minutes later, Liverpool would retake the lead when Van Dijk rose highest to meet a James Milner corner kick and powered a header past Neuer to put his team up 2-1 and give them a crucial second away goal.

Mane then scored his second for Liverpool, heading home at the back post from an inch-perfect Mohamed Salah cross to put the match out of reach for Bayern Munich and send Jurgen Klopp's team into the quarterfinals.

Liverpool join Barcelona, Man City, Man United, Ajax, Porto, Juventus and Tottenham in the last eight and will learn their opponent following Friday's UCL draw.
