Javi Martinez's goal helps Bayern Munich defeat Man United in friendly

MUNICH -- Javi Martinez scored the only goal as Bayern Munich defeat Manchester United 1-0 in the Premier League club's final preseason friendly in a game that raised more questions than answers with just five days to go before the start of the English season.

Jose Mourinho is still missing key players like Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku but the performance in the Allianz Arena was not one to inspire confidence that it will be all right on the night when Leicester visit Old Trafford on Friday.

The Portuguese coach welcomed back Marcus Rashford, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof after their post-World Cup breaks but he still used his prematch interview to pile more pressure on executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward as time runs out to add more new faces.

Mourinho predicted before kickoff it would be a "difficult" season if at least one more new player does not arrive before Thursday's deadline.

It was perhaps fitting that the team he does have endured a difficult start here, too, with David De Gea forced into saves from Thiago and former Arsenal man Serge Gnabry in the opening 20 minutes.

By Mourinho's logic Bayern, with three preseason games under their belt compared to United's five, should be playing catch-up in terms of preparation for the new season.

United kick off the Premier League season against Leicester on Friday while Bayern start their Bundesliga campaign against Hoffenheim two weeks later, after facing Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Super Cup next Sunday.

You wouldn't have known looking at the two teams and the first 45 minutes were played almost entirely in United's half. At the other end Manuel Neuer could have happily watched from a deckchair.

Rashford was one positive for United -- as willing a runner as ever wearing his new No.10 shirt -- starting just 22 days after the end of England's World Cup campaign.

It was in contrast to Anthony Martial, who, according to ESPN FC sources, was left behind in Manchester to do double training sessions after leaving the tour of the United States to attend to the birth of his son.

Mourinho suffered his first blow of the night early in the second half when Eric Bailly was forced off with an injury after 50 minutes.

The second came 10 minutes later when Thiago curled a corner into the near post and Javi Martinez got up highest to head past De Gea, and underscored United's need to sign a centre-back.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Bayern defender Jerome Boateng is rapidly moving up the list of candidates after potential deals for Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Yerry Mina hit problems.

Boateng, 29, also been linked with Paris Saint-Germain, came on at half-time and put in a composed display, although he will have far tougher tests than this wherever he plays next season.

It said everything about United's display that they did not even manage a shot on target.

On a day when runaway champions Manchester City dismantled Chelsea at Wembley, it was not a good sign.
